Yupe, after reading about Bosnia and Argentina, <...and parts of Ferguson MO, Washington DC, Chicago, Los Angeles...> going to the store can get very rough. Fixed that for you.

Put my battle belt on a diet: Slimmed down to just an Esstac double pistol and Esstac double AR mag pouch for ammo. Replaced an ATS IFAK with an Esstac IFAK (very nice piece of kit!) and added an ITS lo-pro bottle carrier (adjustable for just about any size water bottle, canteen, or tall-boy beer can ). Also replace a Strider fixed-blade with a Cold Steel Spike in an RTF Squared kydex sheath. I reall dig the new Esstac IFAK: Nice and lo-profile. I have it centered on the back of my belt so I can rip away with either hand: Close up of the Cold Steel Spike in RTF kydex (this is a "get-the-fuck-off-me" knife) and bottle carrier: Also found out the Esstac pistol mag pouches fit my MP5 .22 mags...winning

The new improved belt is slick, OM. Tactical Guiness holder for the win!
Are you going to keep the suspenders on? They look removeable, and it seems like you've cut weight enough that the gear would ride on a belt just fine unsupported.
I like it.

Operator's preference, but I just like them. They don't get in the way and I like being able to unbuckle the belt, you know, for casual Fridays and shit I need to find a multicam water bottle...

Really like the way that spike is riding. Is that a 6 hole malice clip?

Really like the way that spike is riding. Is that a 6 hole malice clip? Yup, the 3-hole malice clip made the knife ride too high. The 6-hole drops it just right. Again, sweet sheath, homie!!!

I think plates are a good idea. Here's my take, we're the militia. That's a damn strong tradition that must be upheld. If you never, ever use a rifle or wear a plate in defense of liberty it's not a waste. The exercise of rights to defend liberty and our way of life is enough. There is also the display to all who threaten our liberty, we are prepared to defend liberty, now and ever more. Gravedig. I was looking thru the porn pics of OM over on the far side of the world, and stumbled on Greg's words. I saw them when he posted, but today his words ring more true than ever. We should all think about this for a moment, and realize, if things go south, WE ARE IT. We are the line in the sand. There is nothing and no-one behind us. If and when it all falls apart, We. Are. It. It doesn't matter what equipment, or particular bag, or color of camo we use. Those who have become ready for this, will be on the front line for the future of Our Country. Be ready, gentlemen. It is only a matter of time.

I think plates are a good idea. Be ready, gentlemen. It is only a matter of time. Many have thought me daft over the years, but this sentiment has been my guiding star since I was but small.
I am a rifleman, one of many thousands, but the only one of my house. I have three sons to carry on after I am gone, but I must see them grown first. So, I will don my armor when trouble is about, I shall ever keep to the shadows, and let not my rifle bark when my knife's whisper is enough...
My MarCiras is pretty heavy, so I'm looking to upgrade plates and carrier. The FirstSpear STT (@skd) looks like a winner, anyone played with it?
What plates are good? I know everyone talks smack about the steel types, and spall can kill, too, but it seems like they might work. Testing may ensue (we tested the cap out of old SAPI's, worked).

Well said, sir. I got the Spartan AR500 plates a few weeks back. They are heavy, but lots of testing (if youtube is a valid source for test data) shows the lining they paint on does a good job with spall prevention. Had I the money, I'd get one of the cool new ceramic/polyethylene thingys that is starting to make the rounds, but I'll have to wait. Have them riding in a Grey Gear minimalist, they seem comfortable enough to wear for a couple of hours at a time at least. I wish I had gotten the 11x14 plates and a bigger carrier - when I think of rounds inbound, a 10x12 plate starts sounding awful small to hide behind.

Try to remember that bigger plates inhibit your movement more. The plates are only there on the off chance that you don't hit the other guy first.
That said, HIT THE OTHER GUY FIRST.
Armor isn't there to be relied upon. Rely on upon tactics, stealth, movement, and violence of action.
Armor just gives your vitals a second chance should the other guy be a bit luckier than you are that day. Carry a good trauma kit anyway.
Just like a knife fight, the longer you spend in a gunfight, the less likely you are to avoid getting shot.

Steel plates work just fine unless you are using a 55gr or lighter at 5.56 pressures from a long barrel at across the room distances. That's a pretty narrow set of circumstances IMO. They also make level 3+ that will stop those rounds.

I'm thinking that SAPI/ESAPI plates from an interceptor would actually be of more use in a lighter, less cumbersome, plate carrier. Opinions?

That's what I have in my MarCiras, old Interceptor plates, no soft armor, b/c that's what I had lying around. When we tested these plates, nothing we shot at them penetrated. We shot AK, .308, & .40 from 10 feet.
