Holy crap, do packs fill up quickly when you pack for cold weather. I'm staring at a living room floor covered in "stuff", trying to figure how to get it all into one HPG UTE/Highlander combo. Dammit, I knew I should have gone with a Bag of Holding....

Pfft, rookie. Portable hole OK, I panicked and got some "ebola gear" ordered.

Re ebola gear. I think I'm a little too close to the point of origin. Kuwait isn't that far from central Africa, and Kuwait gets a significant portion of it's labor from Africa. If it hits here it will hit hard, as the locals aren't too keyed in on the concepts of sanitation. The kiss on both cheeks thing when meeting could have it taking off like fire on the Hindenburg. AT that time my best ebola gear is anything that transports the wife and I away from here.

In my continuing struggle to go UL with my camping gear, I ordered one of these TINY Esbit stoves - and WOW, it works pretty darn well. Tested it on the bench today, had 16 oz of room temperature water to a rolling boil in 6 minutes 30 seconds. My Vargo Ti alcy stove took 7 minutes 40 sec to do the same thing. Of course, a canister stove can rock it in less than 3 minutes. But for boiling water for a cup of coffee and a Knorr rice side or MH meal, this is the bomb. If I figure 2 tabs per day with 1 spare, I can have 3 days of fuel and the stove for 4 oz. total. And it all fits in a REALLY small space. And unlike almost everything else in the Ultralight world, this is pretty cheap.

Well, my latest thing has been to stockpile spares of survival kit basics...I've been stocking up on the cheaper/smaller things that pay big dividends, and so I can replace gear/build new surival kits with-out having to make a new trip to the store (yes, I have my own "survival store"...)
Recent purchases include N95 Masks, Ferro Rods, whistles, Signal Mirrors. I must admit, I hooked on the UST gear Wal-Mart has been carrying. They are one of the few companies, that, for the most part, get it right the first time. My most recent purchase was some of the 2400 calorie emergency bars.

Well, I recently realized that I needed a daypack. Now, I used to have an ass-load of assault packs; but, I sold them all over the last few years. My Maxped Sitka sling pack and Jansport bookbag were not cutting it for work. Thankfully, I found a Kelty Peregrine 29 on Ebay for about $60 bucks. I had the larger MAP 3500, which was a great pack...just too big for EDC. The Peregrine is just the ticket! Also just got my first Hydroflask water bottle. Holy Shit! These are amazing! I will have more, trust me. This bottle keeps my water ice cold...in fact, the ice hardly melts...while working outdoors in this horrid 100+ degree, 99% humidty coastal South Krak weather. I mean, all day long. Must be magic. I am a happy biologist Expect a review on the Kelty...

I'll blow my day pack out and post it up sometime this week. Nothing ground breaking, just a pack.

It's sat lonely in the corner for a while now. I really need to pop that sucker open and re-inventory it (along with seeing if there's been any damage from batteries I forgot to pull...)

Quoted fo' da TROOF Like 90% of my crap has lithiums in it - it's that damn 10% that's used in spurts that "oh crap, batt's are going what's in the battery drawer - oh hai little Alky AA! Save my day this time an I'll promise that I'll swap you back to a Lithium later...". Time then marches on and I'm greeted with nastied up contacts/broke shit. I think at one point I had most of my equipment using AAA's, then some C123's, now it's just a mishmash again. I need to sort that crap out.

Tis is why I stick with AA lithiums. Period. C123's are nice and all, but AA are the most common form factor, and lithium rechargeables are easy to get.

OK, so my take away from this recent conversation is that if you get lithium AA batteries, you can store them indefinitely in the object and they won't leak/damage it? Is that correct? Any particular brand you use?
