Well if you're spending $5 for an N-95 mask (if I'm understanding you correctly) then you're not exactly maximizing your dollar. You can actually buy them for a dollar a mask and if you buy in bulk can reduce that price even further.
They can also be re-used a few times apiece depending on what you're using them against (Obviously depending on the threat). What are you looking to protect yourself against besides pollen? Influenza, H1N1, tuberculosis or were you thinking of more paint chips and things of that nature?

The $1 masks suck unless you are just sitting/etc. The one I use is: Once you start breathing heavy/sweating, the $1 masks collapse and tend to fall apart. These typcally last me 2 lawnmower days before I have to toss them from pollen/dust/sweat/etc. As to what protection, call it yes, dual use, pollen (it obviously works) and virus. Hell even toss tear gas into the mix with fergusun just last month ?. kinda fiddling if it'd be better to go deep quantity with these that I use, vs a respirator and cartridges .

Sounds like if your allergies are bad you might benefit from the use of a HEPA filter. It hits some people worse than others. Those are better, offer more protection and some of the models you can use them over and over again for 5 years depending on model. They're like $20-$30.
Just depends on how high in protection you want to go.

Those respirators look exactly like the ones we used to use at work on Necrotizing Fasciitis (the flesh eating disease) and airborne MRSA calls. Mostly they just sat in the cabinet or the supply room, but I've used them a few times in conjunction with the moon suits and booties
HEPA stands for High Efficiency Particulate Air (filter). HEPA was developed during the 1940s by the Atomic Energy Commission to efficiently filter radioactive particulate contaminants. HEPA is a type of filtration system that removes microscopic particles from air that passes through the filter. There are different efficiency ranges depending on particle size. The most efficient HEPA filter removes 99.7% of particles with a size of 0.3 microns that enter the filter. Such particles include tobacco smoke, household dust, and pollen.
ULPA filters, or "Ultra-HEPA" filters, are designed to trap 99.999% of all airborne particles with a size of 0.3 microns from the air that passes through the filter. These filters are sometimes used in laboratory and industrial applications such as cleanrooms.
What those ones are rated at I don't know, but they should have an information and spec sheet that would tell you.

Funny enough, I think OffGrid Magazine actually recommended that exact model a few issues ago. I can double check when I get home.

GBM, do those use the 60mm filter or 40mm NATO? I bought a 60 to 40 adapter for my Finnish mask but cant find reasonably priced filters.

40mm NATO. They have them on Amazon $9with free shipping. I'm going to get a few more. The mask fits well and passes ppositive and negative pressure checks. I'm going to get a few more masks too. $20 on Amazon.

Those Israeli masks you bought, when were they made? Did they come with the canteen and drinking straw? Did you get them from Fox Outdoor on Amazon? I was reading the reviews and they are all over the place.

No, didn't come from Fox, some company called IDF. There are ones with the straw but I opted for the non straw version. I need to get a few straws. For drinks. Cause I'd totally drink wih a gas mask on. Anyway, I think the reviews are over the place because 99% of people have never had chemical warefare training, have no clue how to put on a mask, set it up, or maintain them. Huh, kind of like AR-15s. I'm going to train a bit in mine. If you get one bring it to the range next time. If you get one, get a hood and gloves too.

When I looked for a gas mask, I wanted 2 things:
1) External filter - so I don't have to be in a sealed environment to replace the filter. 2) Nothing that obstructs gun sights - having a huge filter at the end of your chin makes it more difficult to aim.

Yeah, I can run a pistol and a rifle with the Israeli, super easy with my USAF mask since it just has a big screen. Issy masks have external filters.
Problem is the USAF mask in $85 and the Issy is $20. Not a tough choice.

Really? $20 for Israeli? Those are like some '90's prices. I used to see them for around that at gun shows and then for some reason the price just suddenly rose. $60 and $80. The price on the new commercial ones was just $40 more so I reasoned I'd just buy one of those (And never did). Edit : These? www.amazon.com/s?ie=UTF8&page=1&rh=i%3Aaps%2Ck%3Aisraeli%20gas%20maskOr were there other ones not coming up for exactly $20?
