How does that data mining for advertising work?
Anyway of stopping it on an iPhone or iPad?
Hate that stuff. Somebody sends me something with a 'Hey, what do you think of this?' and for the next week I see ads for it.
Reminds me of a lower tech version when Tom Cruises character is walking through the subway station in Minority Report.

If you are running the Firefox browser, you can add a plugin called NoScript. It will not let any script run unless you approve it. So you can basically block ads and other crap that slows down the load times. A lot of the datamining stuff is done through scripts and therefore you can decide NOT to let them run.

NoScript is the bomb, just know that if you put it into paranoid mode it can take some time to get everything comfortable (it'll mess with being able to buy things online sometimes, you may not see pictures depending on crosslinking, and it can cause a little stress initially if you're used to just going to a webpage and seeing it). Once you get it configured, though, it's like what the web used to be before advertising and cross-scripting became the norm.
I don't know if it's available for the Safari platform.
Interesting read on the Java. I'm not a fan of Java, it's too open and way to segmented as a "platform" but it's cheap and easy to develop for so it's popular. Hard part is there are plenty of folks out there that restrict the code for only ONE version of Java, so with all the updates etc, it's can't be run on the updated platform. Sucks and is a headache when you need 3 version of Java loaded just to run a couple of apps.
I can totally see them charging for MySQL though. That's been a LONG time coming.

Kinda stuck with Safari since they're both an iPad and an iPhone and I'm clueless to the point where I don't even know how to switch browsers.

Kinda stuck with Safari since they're both an iPad and an iPhone and I'm clueless to the point where I don't even know how to switch browsers. Well, NoScript is really just a Java/script blocker on steroids. If you want to "hide" on the Safari side for the sake of privacy, you could try this product: www.ghostery.com/en/our-solutions/ghostery-add-on/and then to disable scripting you could go with something like this: javascript-blocker.toggleable.com/Not sure if there's iversion of it, but it's supposedly Safari compatible. Another option was Drew's Javascript Blacklister which sort of vanished from a few hosting sites for some reason. It's a very powerful extension for Safari that allows you to block by domain. It's still around here: code.google.com/p/jsblacklist/downloads/listAnd you can download custom blacklists from other users around the web if you so choose. AFA switching browsers, you can always download something like Opera or one of the Mozilla varients for the idevice, they should be availble from the apps store - not on my phone so I can't check it (fair warning, I use my idisaster for a phone, and that's about it, I don't get on the apps store much if at all). It's a jorb, yo - BOOM!

If it's hooked up to an internet connection it's compromised by someone.

If it's hooked up to an internet connection it's compromised by someone. This is an assumption I have always operated on. To the extent that I have disinformation on the HDs of any computers that I won that are connected to the Internet.
