Speaking of phishing attacks there is a "free upgrade to windows 10" running around. Is it legit or a fake?

Speaking of phishing attacks there is a "free upgrade to windows 10" running around. Is it legit or a fake? MS did release a "pre-order download" or sumchit that was passed through the Windows update route, for both users of Win8.1 and Win7 Professional I believe. Jist of it was that you are holding a spot for a digital download of Win10 that will completely wipe out any hope of returning to your old OS once it's been installed. IMO, after playing around with the Win10 beta for more than a few months, I think this is bad juju - not that Win10 is bad (it isn't actually, in my limited testing it's been really nice), it's just that MS is moving to an application "rental" structure over a purchase structure similar to what Adobe's done. You're leasing the programs for the time allowed, and then you need to re-up your Office subscription. I can totally see the OS's starting to go this path also; you want a critcal update that's not on your version list? That'll be 20 bucks please. I'm not a fan of that business model, and I really don't see any issues with Win7 as a long term solution until all the nasty teeth have been shown from Win10. Forget about Win8, our IT guys want to strangle it at this point as it doesn't play nice at all in the AD. As always, YMMV.

Been there since 2002 Longest running install is Debian stable with XFCE because I no likey to monkey TOO much with driver builds, but the most "used" installation I've got is my Crunchbang box just because it's fast on the laptop and momma/kids don't know how to screw it up. My GE CT's run Linux (Redhat), along with a few others. Knowing how to get around the shell and scripts makes my day go much faster compared to the guys that struggle with their Windows boxes.

Got a Driod with Verizon and i use Google Chrome YOU'RE DOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOMED!!!!!!!
Nah dawg, if you're like 98% of the uninteresting Americans out there you're likely being mined for advertising dollars. That's Google's endgame anyway - all your purchase preferences belong to them so they can market appropriately. See if you can get the NoScript plugin for Chrome. Won't save you from Google's tentacles but will keep third party miners from throwing crap at you. In the name sake of digital vulnerabilities - You say to yourself - Self, I'm tired of having a half ass router with menial methods of port monitoring and DMZ/VPN routing, what ever could I do to waste an afternoon and a random computer carcass in the closet? Well boy oh boy do I have a deal for you, Self! Head over to: www.sophos.com/en-us/products/free-tools.aspx and download the Sophos UTM Home Edition, install it onto a blank HD/Computer with a couple NIC's in it and prepare to command exactly what's going in/out of your home network! Guarenteed to block shit you didn't even know you could, in addition to encouraging consumption of massively alcoholic beverages as you get the rules configured (provided you have NO PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE doing it! Oh the JOY!!)!!1!! While there pick up the freebie antivirus for Mac (if you roll the fruit) or the freebie AV for the penguin - your choice! BUT WAIT!!!! THERE'S MORE!!! You have an Android phone and not sure what cesspool it's been flaunting it's panties in? Have no fear! There's also a mobile security suite that's free for your favorite candy knicknamed robot version. Everyone loves free! Go kick the 1's and 0's around for a bit, doesn't cost you anything and you may find something you like (provided you're not signed on the line with M$). There's even an offline scanner for guys that like to use Windows bareback. You dirty, dirty fools. /drops mic NXP

OK, this isn't a vulnerability, but a HUGE impact to the coders around the world. www.reuters.com/article/2015/06/29/us-usa-court-google-idUSKCN0P91O720150629So now Oracle can change a license fee to use Java. You need to understand that java has been FREE since it's inception. Potentially Oracle could charge everyone who uses Java for development. This would be a HUGE impact to costs and I think if Oracle decided to be greedy about it, the development world would abandon java and Oracle products all together as a repercussion. Oracle would be banned from many companies, btw the USGov has exclusive contracts with Oracle. I'm guessing they wouldn't be renewed. Also, MySQL which was always free, has been obtained by Oracle. The base version is still free but the enterprise version not costs money. Seriously they are making efforts to remove free products which have decent performance. PostgreSQL still exists as a free DB along with up and comer "Mongo DB". It's not a relational DB but document oriented.
