Also, don't want to lose sight of the fact that Misterdark is #awesome for taking back control of his fitness. Talk about a never-ending struggle! I'm blessed with great health generally, and literally get PAID TO WORK OUT (because I can use our pretty great FD gym while on-duty), and it's STILL hard for me to stay at the level of fitness I feel is necessary! I really do feel for all the guys out there who have to work their fitness around real-world obstacles.

Here's why I say cut carbs. It boils down to this in my observation, people get the majority of their calories from them. It's the easiest to reduce while increasing protein. I firmly believe that people under eat protein and if you're going to do any sort of exercise you need good building blocks to rebuild the muscle. Carbs just can't do that. Plus it gets people looking at the label.
But a guy lost weight by eating 1500 cals of twinkies a day, so it's not just carbs and sugars. It's over eating. I'm not hollering kale! I'm not atkins or ketosis. I'm reduce the unneeded excess. Carbs, in my observation, is over eaten and the easiest way to reduce caloric intake.

Dannus, I agree with you thay carbs are not the devil, but dropping your intake enough to switch your metabolism over to ketosis (burning ketones rather than glucose) results in faster loss of body fat. Once you get to the weight you want you start adding carbs back into your diet until you start gaiming weight again and back off of them a touch to where you weight is stable. Ketosis = forcing your body into a starvation mode because it doesn't have access to it's preferred energy source. Yes, it burns off your body fat quickly, but that's a pretty damn radical way to do it, IMO, and not sustainable for the average person, at least nobody I've ever known to do it. Anyhoo, no need to argue the pros and cons of Atkins type diets. If they work for you (and the invariably do, at least initially), huzzah. Go for it. To my rant - - Here's the thing about 'carbs'. In common vernacular, 'cutting carbs' is essentially the same as 'cutting calories'. A 12 oz Coke has 140 calories, 39 grams of carbs. You can skip the Coke and drink water instead, and you have reduced your caloric intake by 140. I don't know why we insist on referring to this as 'cutting carbs' instead of cutting calories. Because it sounds faggy to say "I'm counting calories" and kind of gym-bro cool to say "Yeah, cutting carbs, you know, getting sliced up..."? Dunno. It just pisses me off. If you eat 5,000 calories a day and do nothing but sit on your ass, you'll get fat. Doesn't matter if it's 5,000 calories of bacon, or cheese, or Twinkies. If you eat 100 calories per day, you'll starve to death in a month or so. Doesn't matter if it's 100 calories of pure sugar or carrots or pork chop. It's calories, not the individual food constituent. I'm still not disagreeing with your overall point; if your caloric intake exceeds your caloric expenditure you're going to gain weight. If your caloric intake is less than your expenditure you'll loose weight. This is truth. Triggering ketosis is simply a way to speed up the process of taking those calories from stored body fat rather than feeling miserable when your blood sugar dips due to caloric restriction. I suspect the main benefit is that you don't end up with blood sugar spikes with the resultant insulin response followed by storing the calories as fat. From a personal perspective I can say that I don't get that "sleepy" feeling after eating a big meal if there are very few carbs consumed. It's not a gym-bro thing, it's a "my doc warned me my blood sugar levels were a tad high" thing*. *Not horridly so, not even pre-diabetic, but higher than they should be after fasting.

What the goofballs above me said - now, soapbox on:
If you've got Netflix/the interwebz, look for the movie "Fed Up".
Whole grains (not enriched crap) good. SUGAR *ESPECIALLY HFCS/INVERTS/REFINED SUCROSE* BAD!!!!!
Sugar is in everything, and I mean EVERYTHING. Low/no fat items taste like shit, so how does the manufacturer fix it? ADD SUGAR! HFCS is terrible for you, it basically gets dumped straight into the liver and out to the fat. When you start buying food, don't just look at the calories/fat, take a hard look at the amount of sugar in it. Keep that number as low as you can. Serious.
Easiest/hardest thing to drop right meow will be the soda/energy drinks for water/black coffee. Easy because it will make a huge difference in how you feel/calorie intake/wallet, hard because those bubbles and easy, sweet so damn available sugar alarm in brain.
Proteinz/fibre is good. It sticks with you and fills you up. One of my favorite snacks at my desk is steel cut oats in the morning from the cafeteria, and pumpkin seeds in the shell in the afternoon. I'll nomnomnom all day if I'm not careful and it's so easy to find cookies/bars/doughnuts around the hospital for a driveby.
Find someone to share your success with, even if it's a minor victory or a spectacular failure (DOMS, OH LAWDY THOSE DOMS!!!).
And do something, anything. Just do it.

Awesome tips, guys! Thanks! I have done adkins before, and the weight dropped off like magic. Until I ate my first piece of bread after a few weeks. It was messy. I'm just doing it simple: Try to eat as well as I can manage, and cut out the junk. Getting more exercise and drinking way more water than I like. I am also trying to eat a little more carb in the morning, a little more protein at night. We will see how it goes. Not gonna look at the scale for a few days, so I don't fall in that trap. Oh, I didn't get to walk this morning, so I did a few laps of the parking lot at work during lunch. The 100 degree heat actually felt good, for the first 15 seconds. After that it was pretty much downhill.

Ooookay... Thanks for that vid. Wonder if I can get a 'merika bib like that. Yes you can, made in China of course. Now for realz, what'd you do today to kick your own ass? Worked. seriously, I was at job #1 from 10am to 8pm yesterday, then had a session at the studio that ran til 1am. Got home at 130, finally drifted off to sleep at 3. I slept in. Finally got to work at 11 this morning, and have been running full tilt ever since. The events in Charleston stirred up the nest here pretty good, so I've been working on security issues all day. As soon as I leave here (probably around 8 or 9) I have to work another few hours at the studio, so it will be another late night. On a positive note, I haven't had an energy drink since monday. And have drank enough water to float a barge. I started tracking my caloric intake a little more officially as well; I have consumed right at 1100 calories today, and will probably have a snack when I finally get home. So less than 1300 for the day. As long as I keep moving, thats pretty ok. Lots of coffee beans gave up their lives for me over the last few days... ETA Caloric consumption. Breakfast was coffee with a side of coffee, lunch was a Lipton rice side with some pepperoni added in (approx 750 cal), mid afternoon I had a bowl of campbells chunky soup with a couple of saltine crackers (300 cal, but I wanted to put the whole bag of crackers in there) and right now I am finally fixing my breakfast - 2 eggs scrambled, and 4pc bacon (400 cal according to the calculator). That will total me out at 1450 calories, probably a pot of coffee, and well over 2 liters of water. But I didnt get a long walk in. Guess I have to try harder tomorrow.

Of interest, perhaps, concerning the bold portions above.. Have you tried any turkey substitutes for things like bacon, burgers, etc.? Not gonna lie, some of them are pretty damn good fakes. In particular, turkey breakfast sausage (links and roll sausage), turkey brats, and turkey pepperoni are close enough to the real thing that I don't even buy the real thing anymore. Turkey bacon is a decent fake, or at least you will think it is until you get ahold of some real bacon - - there kinda is no substitute for the actual piggy products. Still, a lot of meats have a turkey substitute, and they're worth trying. The difference in calories/fat between a regular brat and a turkey brat is about 50%, no shit, with the only noticeable difference being the turkey one isn't nearly as greasy as the real thing. Other substitutes have similarly radical reductions in fat/calories. Sodium is going to be damn high in all the substitutes, but it's high in all the real things as well, so that's probably a wash. Ground turkey is a pretty good substitute for ground beef as well, especially in things like chili, tacos, spaghetti, and anything else where meat is not the main flavor. Turkey burgers are also very decent in and of themselves. Anyway, try a few of them if you can find them at your local supermarket. I find it's a pretty painless way to cut some fat and calories out of your diet, and I'm all about painless.

Yea, some things I don't think I'll back down on. Turkey bacon is fine, tastes great actually. But a man can only cut away so much. Also, I am cleaning out the fridge of everything, the bits o wonderful piggy protein were there so I used them.
FWIW, I haven't been drinking much booze this week. Just haven't had time really. But it helps, right?

Turkey bacon is a lie. It's like going to a titty club on geriatric night - you're in for a bad time regardless what you're spending. Never compromise on bacon. Eva. Turkey kielbasa? GTG. Turkey loaf? GTG. Turkey Pepperoni? GTG. Turkey sausage? Kinda GTG. Turkey masquerading as the candy of meat? NOPENOPENOPE! Good on ya for limiting booze. I love my beer, I really do - but it's just full of empty calories that I have to sweat off later. Keep it up dude, you're doing it! As always,

Life chewed me up and spat me out today. I hit the wall somewhere around noon. Went and walked for 30 mins this morning, got to work early, and at 1030 when I realized I was going to be walking across joists in the attic of the building all day, I knew I was screwed.
I came down a bunch of times to cool off and rehydrate, but damn.
On a positive note, my church now has 4 additional cameras covering the daycare. And wiring is pulled for a ton more cameras to go in next week. The suck part is, it will be me doing it.
Uhh, Rice side and a clif bar for lunch, whole wheat pasta and chicken for dinner. Over 3L of water consumed, and one Red Bull. Someone add it up for me. Im going to bed.
