I weighed myself yesterday, its official, I am fat. 265# and 6'2". And totally winded just going up a few flights of stairs. If the PAW happened today, I would be stealing one of those walmart powered shopping carts to try and escape the horde. Not a good plan.
So! This morning I got up earlier than I would like, wrapped the hell out of my (its been 2 months since surgery why isnt it better) knee, and walked 2 miles. Only took 7 hours!
(kidding, but it felt like it)
As with most anything I do, I have to go completely overboard or I don't feel like I am accomplishing anything. This will be my journal. Or obituary.
More to come.

Diet: Since I am still working 2 1/2 jobs, there are lots of days when I am sorely tempted to grab fast food for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. And lots of days, I give in to that. So, starting now, if it comes out of a window, I don't eat it. I have also become addicted to energy drinks. Those are evil things, that I have grown dependent on. This morning when I wanted one, I first drank a full glass of water. I still wanted the energy drink, but not as much. We will see how this works out. As for booze... Ugh. I'll get back to you on that.

Don't change anything right now but actively look at the amount of carbs you bring in. Carbs turn straight into fat. You'd be surprised how many carbs you eat, do that for week or two then cut carb intake by 1/4 then, when you feelz like it, cut it in half. Start taking a gummy multivitamin. Seriously, in general, the American diet stinks. Drink coffee over energy drinks. Coffee has a lot of anti oxidents and it's only draw back is caffiene takes more water to metabolize. Now, this is that big one, eat 1/4 less food. Then eat a small good snack inbetween meals when you feelz hungry. Almonds, carrots, protein bars. Real protein bars. When you start working with weights, replace a meal with a protein shake and a snack. You'll need it. Muscles crave protein, it's what they crave. Those are just some small changes to maek that will make a big difference. I also highly suggest the fitness pal app for your phone.

Watch out for supplements and low cal energy drinks that give you mega doses of B vitamins. You CAN overdose on B vitamins. It is a short duration overdose with generally no long lasting effects due to B vitamins being water soluable, but no one needs to vomit and pass out. A multivitamin with around 200% of your B6 and B12 are fine.

The thing that works for me is structured classes. Me too, but with my schedule, I can't plan time out much farther than 30 minutes or so. After I get back up to speed (literally) on walking and hopefully biking again, I will consider a gym membership somewhere, maybe. I have been a gym guy in the past, it takes a lot of time and focus to get there enough in the week to make a difference. For now, diet and simple exercise will have to do.

Carbs are not the devil, they are a ready supply of easy energy for your body, and ditching them right when you're also starting a fitness program will make you feel even more wasted. I think people who harp on carbs piss me off, in general (not you, GBM, you aren't doing that), cause they're bad at science - - not all carbs are created equal (well, chemically they all get broken down into glucose, but shit happens in between). Sure, don't eat a can of frosting. But you can have a piece of toast or a potato or pasta. Not going to kill you. It's calories, not carbs when you get down to it... /rant I have a buddy who suggested that about 15 minutes before every meal I eat a piece of fruit and drink a glass of water. Apple, pear, orange, whatever I was in the mood for. Ended up being really killer advice. Gives you a little extra water, gives you a little fiber/vitamin/carb hit, and fills you up just a tiny amount so you probably eat a little bit less when the meal actually comes. If I'm trying to clean up my diet I still default to that little hint. It's a good one.

I cut my carb intake to 20grams max per day and went from 216 to 186 in about 4 months without any added physical activity. Work has me tied up about 15 hrs a day, 6 days a week... Zero time for an exercise routine. I ate pork, chicken, beef, fish, and all the leafy greens I wanted. I only used homemade salad dressings in order that I could be sure there was no sugar in the mix. Lots of black coffee. First 3 days suck a bit, after that I felt years younger. PRO TIP-For booze stick with unsweetend hard liquor (no schanps, ect) and sugar/carb free mixers.

Just to add in, I'm not saying get rid of carbs, no, that's bad. You will crash hard. You will not have energy but loads of people are eating why too many and the wrong kind, hence why folks are getting really chubby.
That said, we eat too many. Basically, watch what you eat. Do you need the extra helping of rice? Do you need extra bread with your meal? Eat smaller meals with better food and small snacks inbetween. Increase activity, walking is great. If you can only get 15 minutes, that's 15 more than nothing. Do 10 pushups in the office at your desk. That's 10 more than nothing. Etc, etc, ad nauseum.

Dannus, I agree with you thay carbs are not the devil, but dropping your intake enough to switch your metabolism over to ketosis (burning ketones rather than glucose) results in faster loss of body fat. Once you get to the weight you want you start adding carbs back into your diet until you start gaiming weight again and back off of them a touch to where you weight is stable.

Ketosis = forcing your body into a starvation mode because it doesn't have access to it's preferred energy source. Yes, it burns off your body fat quickly, but that's a pretty damn radical way to do it, IMO, and not sustainable for the average person, at least nobody I've ever known to do it. Anyhoo, no need to argue the pros and cons of Atkins type diets. If they work for you (and the invariably do, at least initially), huzzah. Go for it. To my rant - - Here's the thing about 'carbs'. In common vernacular, 'cutting carbs' is essentially the same as 'cutting calories'. A 12 oz Coke has 140 calories, 39 grams of carbs. You can skip the Coke and drink water instead, and you have reduced your caloric intake by 140. I don't know why we insist on referring to this as 'cutting carbs' instead of cutting calories. Because it sounds faggy to say "I'm counting calories" and kind of gym-bro cool to say "Yeah, cutting carbs, you know, getting sliced up..."? Dunno. It just pisses me off. If you eat 5,000 calories a day and do nothing but sit on your ass, you'll get fat. Doesn't matter if it's 5,000 calories of bacon, or cheese, or Twinkies. If you eat 100 calories per day, you'll starve to death in a month or so. Doesn't matter if it's 100 calories of pure sugar or carrots or pork chop. It's calories, not the individual food constituent.
