I’ve got a buddy who is a right-handed shooter but left eye dominant. Any suggestions on how to improve pistol shooting with that set of criteria? It’s hard for him to shoot both eyes open, and he has to do kind of a weird head tilt if he is shooting one eye open because of his different eye dominance. He is a pretty horrible shot with a pistol, and the normal things I tell new shooters to help them improve aren’t really working.

Off the top of my head and not meant to be flippant, learning to shoot with the other hand comes to mind. And/or using a miniature red dot a la RMS, delta, or the holosun.

My father wasn't cross dominant, but he did lose an eye to diabetes and after he lost his eye he switched to shooting left hand on both pistol and rifle rather than trying to cross his head over.

Well, hit the range the other day with a couple of other folks. One being my wife's boss, who had never shot before and who was keenly interested; the other a gentleman in is late 70's, retired cop (warrants) from Rochester, NY. The fuzz had a few boxes of 9mm he wanted to gift me (leftovers from a deceased friends stash) as he's a .40 guy. A great time was had by all, the new shooter was grinning a whole lot and considering hitting a local indoor range a couple of times a week on the two hours his business is shut down during the middle of the day*. Retired fuzz said he hadn't had this much fun in years (none of us was interested in ego games at the range) and he sprung for a crapload of beer, steaks, shrimp, and lamb on the bbq back at his place poolside. As he's been raised int he <old> white glove school of weapons cleaning, he's thrilled at my introducing him to bore-snakes and in his late 70's is really starting to enjoy an AR15...absolutely hooked at the concept of a red dot for both rifle and pistol. I noticed the factory sights on out new 9mm Witness Compact seemed to be more on with 147gr that with the donated 115gr. Also less snappy. This little steel framed thing had such mild recoil that even shooting one hand/off hand the recovery was fast and easy. Definitely a keeper. *Bonus being that my wife would get to go along and increase her range time.

I considered coaching him to shoot left-handed, but honestly he is very right hand dominant. I suppose with enough practice you could re-train yourself to do everything opposite hand (mag changes, malfunction drills, etc.), and I suppose you SHOULD ideally be equally proficient at all pew-pew related tasks to be basically ambidextrous, but... We talked about shooting with a red dot, but I was looking for a cheap fix. Sounds like your range day was awesome! As an aside, it has been my experience that, unless they are involved with a tactical team of some sort, most police officers (active and retired) have almost a complete disinterest in shooting. Maybe it feels too much like work for them, like being an accountant who tabulates charts for fun on their off-days?

Looks like Defense Distributed just won it's case against the State Dept regarding ITAR being applied towards it's 3d image files. These are the folks who did the "Ghost Gun" thing who the State Department jumped on with hobnailed boots for posting the production files online, with the State Department claiming such online posting counted as an export of a munition under ITAR regs. Aside from the warm freedom of speech fuzzies the ruling gives, there is a real nugget of win included for the 2A crowd. The US government now officially acknowledges that non-full auto firearms up to .50cal are not intrinsically military. All the claims by the anti-gun crowd that AR15s and their kin are "weapons of war" are moot. They'll still spout that nonsense, but as far as it having any traction for getting into AWB type legislation it's dead.

Whelp, just signed a new contract. Assuming nothing goes pear shaped, I'll be spending the next 12 months working in the hellhole that is Dubai.
The sacrifices I make......

It's not all aged whiskey, steaks, and dancing girls. I'm in a soft structure and have to deal with the steambath that is the out-of-doors this time of year. Of course the Aussies have cold beer close to hand......

Dear Hive-Mind, I have a quandry. My beloved bride has expressed a wish, an undeniable wish, to purchase for me a firearm in the $1K range as a birthday present. My problem is that I can't think of any off the shelf firearm that I want, and she wants to buy me a complete gun...not parts. As an example of her thinking, she thought an MP5/SP5K (semi) would look spiffy. She's no doubt go for one with the giggle switch if they were in her quoted price range. Me, I'm open to anything...cowboy action to space age cool kid stuff. Ideas?
