Hey! I love beer too. This thread is great. Ironically when I turned 21 I could barely choke down Budweiser now Im a raging hop head. A lot of beers you guys are listing I've never heard of..must be an east coast thang. I am fortunate to live in an area absolutely awash with breweries..heres some of my favorites (that youve probably never heard of): Ninkasi Total Domination IPA Ninkasi Tricerahops IPA Pyramid Outburst imperial IPA ($2.50/22oz @ 8.5 ABV woot woot) Good Life Descender IPA Double Mountain IRA (love me some red ale) Bridgeport Kingpin (basically IRA) Bridgeport Hop Czar Shock Top with orange Dos XX lager with lime (head nod to GBM) Widmer Hefeweizen with lemon Full Sail session (nice, crisp lager) Heineken Stella Artois Lagunitas Shugga Shugga Lagunitas Imperial Stout Many others that I may or may not have killed too many brain cells to remember. Cheers! Calls himself a hop head, and lists a brown and a RIS from Lagunitas. Dood. Go get yo self a bomber of Hop Stoopid. If you're going to Lagunitas, the best cheapo hop fix in the big bottle section is HopStoopid. 100+ IBU's of love. Get some. Also must tries for hop heads running amok in the midwest, head to Michigan... Founders - Double Trouble (IIPA), Devil Dancer (IIIPA - warning, sip this one, it's a doozy), and if you can find it, The Dissenter (IPL as in lager - it will blow your mind). Bells - 2 Hearted in a can, get it in the can. Seriously. Firestone Walker - Any of the Jack series. Double Jack is a little vicious if it warms up. Great Lakes Brewing - Nosferatu, Lake Erie Monster, Commodore Perry

Maybe that seems to run in the family but i have not been diagnosed with it yet. I know next to nothing about the condition, but I do have a friend who has developed colitis and the gluten in beer exacerbates it (nausea, cramping, etc.). He has to follow a pretty strict diet to keep things flowing the way they should, and sadly enough beer is no longer on his menu. I presume if that is your issue you would also have troubles with other gluten foods like standard breads, etc.

NXP, Ill have to try that hopstoopid..feel like I've seen it around but never grabbed any. Your thread on daddy soda (does my dog count as a kid?) has inspired me to start homebrewing, Ill have to wait a bit for supplies..may buy a kit with my taxes. Any suggestions on starter kits?
Red, that's too bad. It may be worth grabbing a 6 pack of some gluten free beer, we have a few over here called Omission and Redbridge I believe. Would at least help isolate the gluten.

Omission isn't a true "GF" beer. There was a huge hub-bub about it from the GF brewers/drinkers, as it can send some folks that are really sensitive to the can with a quickness. There are lots of other GF beers and breweries out there, though - it's really starting to come around now, with more than just the typical sorghum/rice/sugar beers that are cheap to crank out. You can actually get malted spelt, as well as a bunch of other GF grains in not only a base malt, but also in crystals and biscuit/brown/blacks.
There are a few great GF beers out there, I'll plug the local boys from MKE, Lake Front Brewery (awesome brewery and great beer), as well as Dogfish Head. The Abita GF I tried was good too. Lots of options, but if you don't like beer there's nothing at all wrong with that.
Love me some scotch neat too! Must be single malt...
Tony -
If you just want to try it, go with an extract kit that has steeped grains. It's easy to do on a stove top as you'll only be boiling 3-3.5gal, then adding water after the fact to "top up" to 5gal in the fermenter. All the kits are about the same if you're looking at an IPA style beer - just depends on what hops you get (or if you want to add MORE hops to the base kit), where it kicks your tail is on the shipping depending on where you are. I'm not sure where in the US you are, so if you want you can PM me and that'll help focus a bit.
Best thing to do is find someone local that knows what they're doing, and see if you can tag along for a brew day. I love doing that up here now, I've already introduced 4 people to brewing - they get to see the process, see what happens when you make a mistake, how to correct for it and not panic, have fun, and I even send them home with some goodies. Last guy got a half a pack of yeast, 2oz of homegrown hops, an airlock and a bucket to ferment in. I don't care - he loved it and was so excited to brew on his own, I think his wife's about ready to kill me now. HA!
If you're talking about getting the whole she-bang (fermenters, bottle capper, caps, tubing, sanitier, etc), then HOLD ON - you don't need all that crap to make beer (trust me). I can get you a list of stuff you need, and it's not that expensive - most of it you've probably already got. Those premade kits are full of crap you'll use once/twice and hate, then they just hang out and collect dust. There is some things you need to buy, and some of it costs more - I can hear it now, "2.25 a foot for silicon tubing?!""Yes. Get the damn tubing." - than what you'd expect, but in the end it's worth it if this is a hobby you'll keep for a bit.
PM me if you've got questions.
MMMmmmmmmmmmmm Beer!

So much love in here right now i feel it. The Gluten's well they ( doctors over a few years ) say my brother has celiac disease ( in know some say that's a lie and it is an intolerance ). I can still eat breads and pasta and stuff but i do notice a difference after eating sme stuff at times. When i first started drinking it was Yuengling lager, Red Dog, and countless other beers. Just something that started to happen a few years back.

SO, purchased a sixer of one of the recommended beers (Dogfish Head 90 minute IPA) and it's very nice! The first sip is a little less than "Yowza!!" as far as the hoppiness (an IPA or IIPA that 'yowzas!! with every sip can be a bit much...), and it mellows out really nicely, actually has a bit of a sweet aftertaste. I'll keep it on my purchase list.
I also found a few other brands which were recommended, but since a six pack lasts me a few weeks I didn't buy any yet. I'll keep trying the stuff you guys are suggesting. BEER!!!!

Great! Glad you liked it, granted it DFH 90min isn't really a face-peeler, but it is a fantastic representation of the style. Six pack lasts you a few weeks... Spoiled myself tonight and brought home a bottle of Chimay Blue - need to get my Belgian on this Friday.
