Due to a combination of things it looks as if I'll probably demobilize from over here around the beginning of the new year, ending a run that started in September of 2004.
The current contract is crap, and it doesn't look likely to get better come January (although I could be wrong about that). I'm sick of the M.E., and while I may end up taking another contract over here it will be "living out of a bag" rather than "living here".
Also, my father passed a few weeks back....hadn't seen him face to face in over two years. Ouch.
Not sure how it's all going to pan out, but I feel like it's time to pop smoke and GTFOOD.
Now I'm going to enjoy the rest of this bathtub gin.......maybe fry up some bacon with the windows open.

All good things have to come to an end.
A buddy once offered me a job on the medical side of contracting in Afghanistan. However while the money was good (at the very least twice as much as I make here and possibly three times as much considering benefits and bonuses) I couldn't take the separation from family. At the time my son had just been born a few months before and while the money was tempting in the end my decision not to go boiled down to not being away from him for that long.
I like adventure and travel and the whole possibility of gun-bomb play doesn't scare me as much as it would if I were smarter, but that's what killed it for me.
However despite the whole thing leaving a bad taste in your mouth right now I'm betting that there are some aspects of it that you'll miss though. Maybe once your batteries are recharged you can hit it again from a different angle.

No doubt. If it wasn't for me being on this side of the pond I wouldn't have met and married Mrs. LowKey....which would have truly been tragic. She's probably the only human being on the planet that can and will put up with me for more than a week or so at a shot. My whole time over here would be well spent if all it gave me was the introduction to her.
Future contracting is probably in the cards, just not with my base of operations being in the sandbox.

From what I understand Muslim fundementalism has changed dramatically since the early 2000's. Maybe better to stick closer to home and out of the hotspots.

I just don't want to keep an apartment here anymore. Iraq is starting to look interesting again. I kinda sorta have an urge to see if I can still run between the raindrops up there.

Guess I need to hold off on that run to AK Bro, you and any of the other F&L regulars have carte blanche to go enjoy yourself on my property even if I'm not there. You'll be needing a tent or a hammock, but you're more than welcome. Just give me a shout in advance and I'll give you something in writing so no one will bother you. I can even steer you towards a guy that can rent you kayaks or skiffs, as well as wheels. He's a bit of an opportunist, but his prices are reasonable. Karta Bay and the Karta Bay wilderness is about 15-20 minutes away by skiff. Go get yourself a LOT of salmon, or go up and bag yourself a huge Black bear along with blueberry flavored venison.

Will it be weird if you show up to your AK property and find a group of us hanging out in the courtyard of the duplexes we've built? I promise I'll give you the password that drops the drawbridge across the moat...

I remember a few years back, the PA NG were doing their yearly 2 weeks training and a local community approached them to help with a project. They basically needed to replace an old steel bridge, very short. PA NG came in and used a sky crane (I think they retired these by now) to take out the old bridge and brought in the new one and all in a few hours. Wrote it off as "training".
Have you ever though about approaching the AK NG to see if they would airlift supplies out to your location as part of their yearly training cycle? Maybe drop off 2 containers or something.
Just a thought.

That bears some thought...thank you!
BTW, when and how did I acquire the "come and take it" avatar?
