Thought it would be fun to have an omnibus thread for this years' hurricane threats. I mean really, we are only a week into official hurricane season, and the 3rd named storm of the year (don't forget Hurricane Alex, back in FREAKIN JANUARY) is bringing heavy rain to south florida as we speak. Colin is expected to work its way up the SE seaboard over the next few days. Fun times.

It's been a good 10 years since we've had one in my area, and it's been so quiet in general the last few years.....starting to get that spooky feeling.

I was driving a Semi from NOLA to Georgia when Hurricane Dennis made landfall. Lotsa fun, that was. I think they hung the "ROAD CLOSED" sign off the back of my rig.

Yeah, in between Mobile and Pensacola. After me and a couple buddies finished boarding up our houses the Saturday before Katrina hit (it was pointing right at us at that time), we went on one last pre-disaster ATV ride on Sunday. One of our favorite ride spots is right along I-10 (and the big spillway tunnels running underneath it), and by Sunday they moved the landfall cone further to the west of us....so we would stop riding every once in a while and just watch the bumper-to-bumper sea of humanity from Louisiana & Mississippi creeping along the interstate, trying to get into the Florida panhandle. ETA: The state DOT just had a practice reverse flow exercise on I-65 a couple weeks ago. But they usually have one every 3 or 4 years. The biggest bottle neck is the Wallace tunnel on I-10 in Mobile. They've been trying to wrangle-up the money to replace the tunnel with a 6 lane bridge.....but even if they started construction today, it would probably take 8 - 10 years to build the dang thang.

Just realized that today is the 37th anniversary of Hurricane Fredrick. I was just a wee child, but I can still remember the "Gettin' Ready For Freddie" song they played on the local radio stations a couple days before it hit.
We got hammered pretty hard by that one. Our power was out for three weeks. But my Grandfather had one of his tractors hooked-up to a big PTO generator (hurricane or not, them cows still had to be milked, and the milk refridgerators still had to run), so we stayed up at the farm house until the power was restored.

LOL. No, I just accept that the price for living in paradise is getting kicked in the nuts by a bad storm every 25 years or so.

12 years ago today Hurricane Ivan ran over us. Worst storm since Frederick, except this time we had 500+ Co-Op Linemen from 14 states already prepositioned at hotels in Montgomery, AL and Jackson, MS when Ivan made landfall....so as soon as it passed, they came arunnin'.
ETA. We also had 200 Right-Of-Way/tree trimmers help out also. Don't want to leave those guys out. My first couple years at the power company were on the ROW crew, and those guys kick ass and have a fairly thankless job.
