Here's a nice thought experiment for you.
Let's say, just hypothetically, that you and your family have decided to take a car tour vacation this summer. As part of those vacation plans it turns out that you will be traveling to one or more states that do not recognize your CWP. And it could even be said that one or more of those states consider it a crime to even POSSESS a firearm, even if it is locked in the vehicle.
Knowing that, if it is found, you are looking at significant court fees and fines, jail time, and the most likely loss of your permission to carry back home (I don't think any state allows felons to possess a CWP) Would you have a firearm(s) with you anyway, and just trust you won't need it? Do you adhere to the "better to be judged by 12 than carried by 6" mentality? Or do you want to show your family what a good, upstanding, law abiding citizen would do, and leave it at home for this one trip?
Discuss.
(I've already thought through this one, and have decided my particular course of action. But I would love to know your thoughts)

I need some clarification from the masses....
Is a firearm a firearm if it is in pieces?

You can carry as many barrels as you want, anywhere you want. It's the receiver that counts.

I wouldnt go anywhere that I couldnt at least possess it. If no CC, thats fine I'll OC if legal and if not keep it in trunk and carry a knife and pepper spray. Might seem silly but I just dont like not having a pistol accessible to me.
Already annoying enough I have to work 40+ hours a week unarmed.
That said it doesn't have to be anything crazy. A 6 shot .38 and a speedloader is cool with me. My shitty state travel combo is a S&W 64-3 3" .38spl and a 12ga 4 shot 870 Wingmaster. Cant see where those would be prohibited.

If just passing through, unload the firearm and lock it in the trunk of your car (it a locked case) with the ammo in a separate container (in the trunk is required for the Fed law that protects travelers, the rest is just to make things abundantly clear if something happens and you go to court) If one of those states is your destination then you have two options: leave it home and be legal or ignore their <horrible> law and exercise your natural right.

Not passing thru, sorry. Actually staying for several days. So Fed law can't help me on this one (as if Federal law really helps anyone, ever)

Generally these days I won't go to any part of the country where I can't carry a firearm.
However the whole time I was growing up in California from my late teens to my mid 20's I carried periodically. It's illegal, but it's a misdemeanor, big deal. It was usually something that was inexpensive that worked.
If forced to go back to Cali for whatever reason (family probably) I'd probably do the same thing, just carry anyway and when inside the car put it someplace out of sight. If they searched the car anyway without my permission or without a warrant it could get tossed out court even if they pulled me over, even if they decided to search and even if they arrested me. The police generally aren't looking at middle class white dudes who aren't dressed like a biker or a peckerwood and/or who doesn't look like a junkie.
I refuse to go to the vast majority of the New England States (excepting Vermont, Maine, New Hampshire and western Pennsylvania) or Maryland. Unless there was going to be something like a few million bucks waiting for me when I get there the upper east coast just isn't my thing.
We did go to St. Lucia on a vacation and I couldn't take a gun. I took a fixed blade Mora knife that I wouldn't feel all that bad about tossing it into some ivy or throwing it in a trash can if I had to.

I've heard Maryland has some severe laws against firearms and even transporting bullets... I haven't researched for myself but it is enough to keep me away from that state line.
Reality is you have to go where you have to go. We went on vaca last year where a firearm was impractical. I made a knife choice and learned where the best places not to go were. The best you can do.

"Thou shalt know the 11th Commandment, and keep it, wholly: Thou shalt not get caught..."
This covers all of my exploits, a few of which may resemble this exercise...
Shit. That didn't work...

Leave it at home. Double up on my situational awareness and avoidance techniques, consider carrying a non-lethal device (OC spray, stun guns) if allowed, and make sure I've got a decent folder knife on me at all times. Getting caught is a lose/lose, even if you use your firearm to successfully defend yourself you may face charges. Shitty, but true.
Realistically, there is damn little random violence in this country. If you aren't dealing with dirtbags or putzing around in shitty neighborhoods in the wee hours, you're almost certainly NOT going to get assaulted. I would depend on the tried and tru methods of staying in reputable places, parking in well lit areas, being back in the room by the time it's getting late (say after 10 PM), being extra polite to people, etc. Even if you get mugged, you will almost certainly be okay if you hand over your shit - - most small-time dirtbags just want yo cash, and will bolt when you give it up.
So, you're balancing the statistical near certainty that you will NOT be victim of violent crime if you take proper precautions, as well as the statistical near certainty that you will likely NOT be badly hurt or killed if you are the victim of a violent crime (like a strong arm robbery), against the incredibly small chance that you'll be busted with your gun and get criminally charged, or that you'll have to use your gun to defend yourself or loved ones. There is a by far greater chance that you'll have a fun, uneventful vacation than any of the above happening.
FWIW, with rare exceptions my wife can carry anywhere thanks to LEOSA, so I literally never have to worry about being unarmed when we're out and about. That probably makes me rather cavalier about paying attention to gun laws.

By and large, if you avoid playing stupid games(going stupid places with stupid people to do stupid things at stupid times) you avoid winning stupid prizes.
Sadly, most of us have at least one person(some of us have more) that insist on dragging us in to stupid games.
We, of course, as the 'prepared individual' are relied upon to furnish our problem solving skills.
To this end, it helps to have tools handy, skills in their employment, and enough people-skills to keep the 11th Commandment. Wholly.
