So anyway, I bought a truck a few weeks ago. It's a new to me 2006 Nissan Frontier, 2wd, 2.5L 4 cylinder gas burner. Not the best candidate for a BOV conversion, but it is what I wound up with. That being said, I am a firm believer that a two wheel drive can get you into and out of some messy environments, it is just a matter of good piloting, and knowing where not to take a vehicle. I had a 2wd Expedition that I drove in a lot of really crappy stuff, and as long as you play nice with physics, 2wd can work. A 20ft, 2 ton come-along can help. This thread will detail my painfully slow conversion from a basic gear hauler into a slightly nicer, slightly upgraded gear hauler/BOV for those living in the flats. First up, the truck as it sat on the lot (already posted in another thread, but hey) Up next, the upgrades thus far. (Hint, I hated the wheels the minute I saw them)

So, first upgrade is wheels and tires. The Nisson 4 cylinder is a peppy little engine, and the 15/235 tire setup that came standard was just a bit too loose. After an arduous search (actually about 3 minutes on craigslist) I found a set of 17"s with good 265/65 tires for not many monies. They were off a 2005 pathfinder, and bolted right on. Without any other changes, I can tell a much smoother ride, as well as better control of torque down in 1st gear. It is working the engine a little more to get them spinning, which is fine by me. I have plans for the engine anyway. I can still go to a taller tire, but will burn that bridge when I come to it. So, new tires checked off the list. Up next, a better stereo! ( and move the CB over from my old truck )

Nobody else wants to stick a pedestal mount in the back?
Can't handle 'technical difficulties' without a technical vehicle...

US flex-mount system should handle most US ordinance, from SAW to Mk19.
