Impressive yields! I bought some rain barrels off a fella there in Charleston who also sold shipping containers. I filed that info away just in case...

Check out Aquaponics. Short version? Feed fish, the fish's waste feeds your plants and thus cleans the water for the fish. Use garbage to feed black soldier fly larvae (they don't eat as adults, so not really pests) which are good food for your fish. Grow bed volume is equal to the volume of your fish tanks. You can do this with only one pump, so PV cells charging a battery of sufficient size to run the pump for 24 hrs would take you off grid. Saves water, too.

OM is an Aquaponics Expert. Or at least Clemson said he is.

I still want to set up something on my homestead, but dialing in our gardens and getting chickens is top priority (besides, time permitting, we have world class fishing on the property I work on). Lowkey nailed the basics. Tilapia is what I always recommend. Somewhere on that other board I posted the system I built at Clemson.

I totally want to set up a micro aquaponics setup at work just to mess with people. Something simple, a cheap aquarium tank, probably a bell siphon system and lettuces/greens. Having issues deciding on fish (obviously talapia are the goto, but I need small fish for a small system).
OM, recommendations?

Yea, but you always get dirty looks when you pull the goldfish out to fillet them for lunch...

Goldfish should be just fine. Yea, but you always get dirty looks when you pull the goldfish out to fillet them for lunch... Teeny-tiny fillets! Bread 'em ad fry em, and people will thing they're McNuggets.......with tails The fish in an aquaponics system are a perk, not the primary goal. Any fish that (pardon me) shits a lot will do well. You want them converting those black soldier fly larvae into nutrients that the plants can use. When the fish get too big or over populated for the tank then you can harvest them and eat 'em. Until then they're your high speed composting units. Really, solar cells (with a sufficient NiFe battery backup) and a pump combined with a greenhouse suitable to your climate should make you independent of the produce department at your local supermarket (except for specialty stuff). Build one already or you're an idiot
