Lol, you mean a Crypto special? I'd save your money. Buy / have extra Glocks. Buy / have extra ARs. For you to use. For family to use. For friends to use. Have lots of ammo. Have house ammo. Have Buried ammo. Have cross town ammo. Have out of state ammo. For the price of a nice 1911 and some stocked .45, you could buy/build two $500 basic ARs, 250 rounds of wolf each, 2 chest rigs, and 20 magazines for your friends to have down the road. That's how I'm thinking these days. I'm selling off all my foofoo firearms and calibers. I'm replacing them with $389 G17s, $500 S&W MP15s, and cheap ammo, mags, and some cheap tactical gear to go with each. ^This. Those are some really good points and my thinking is starting to go along the same path. I've sold several of my foofoo guns to buy more of the common stuff (especially lots of ammo, mags and an upcoming carbine course), but mostly I'm just keeping what custom stuff I have and not just buying anything to add to those guns. Couldn't bear to part with some of my custom or historical guns that I already have, but I'm not buying anything new that falls into that area.

Alright, you Debbie Downers. Quit bringing logic and validity to my dreams of squandered time and money. Seriously - next gun is a G26. It's been on the boards for a LONG ass time, it will be bought.
I have been playing around with the thought of picking up a police trade-in G22 and sending it off to Bowie Tactical for the Chop and reddot ala RG's FNP45. I figure if I can get the gun around the mid 3's, the cost of milling/supressor height sights and a Leupy red-dot will still keep me under a Sig. And it'd be cool as shit, and fill the 40SW notch until I could get a 357Sig barrel.
ETA - AR's are covered for the fam, friends have their own rifles, ammo's covered with the exception that there's never enough 9mm (556's solid on training and soft/spongy), and my chest rig is the saddest panda in the land - but it'll hold 4 30rd'ers and a few pistol mags with a oh-shit kit. Kind of want to move to the battle/gamer belt setup, but that's on the back burner as I only discovered IPSC this summer and didn't really do anything with it

TenEight, I don't know about your math, have you priced nice 1911s lately? They are running under a grand for good, basic pistols, and the bells and whistles ones are only a few hundred dollars more. But I get what you are saying. Invest in other things for prepping. But sometimes, you just WANT that one. you know? This is an abbreviated conversation I had with a buddy who just bought a 1911.
"I want a nice Lightweight Commander style pistol. What should I get?"
"What are you going to use it for?"
"I just want a 1911, I thought the Commander would be a good trade for concealment and stuff."
"Are you really going to carry it?"
"Well..."
"There's not that much difference in the size when it comes to reality. Look, you've already go the G19, that's what you carry everywhere. As someone who had a LW Commander, and a G19--guess which one I still have?"
"Yeah, but everyone should have a 1911."
"Okay, but you're just going to shoot it, really, you're not going to bug out with it, you're really not going to carry it but maybe twice in your life; Truth is, if I have to bug out, I'm carrying my Sig or my Glock, and I'll be crying about the 1911s in the safe with each step further away from home. Go with the best full sized 1911 you can afford."
"Fine. What kind of 1911?"
"How much do you want to spend?"
"A grand, Maybe. Not much more than that."
"Get a Colt. Don't look back, just buy a Colt. They are doing the Series 70 again. Buy one of those and be happy."
"What about this Kimber?"
"Do you listen to anything I say? Get the Colt."
"How about the Remington?"
*sigh* "If you like it."
1911s are pistols people buy because they want that piece of nostalgia in their hand. It's a connection to a WWI doughboy in the trenches and a Marine island hopping. I never try to talk them out of a 1911, I just try and talk them into a good one!

Agree 100% Doc. Both with the sentiment and the suggestion for the Colt. Can't beat a Colt Ser70 for a good, workhorse 1911. A good friend just went through this with a Garand. He has absolutely no need for it, doesn't hunt it or do high-power, shoot long distance. All he wanted was the history of it, as he had one in the Navy, so he bought one and loves to polish the stock and break it down to clean it.
