While this thread will be primarily to discuss current survival stories, we can also entertain older survival stories, as long as the sharer gives at least SOME insight into the rights/wrongs of the story, and maybe give some insight into how it could have been better handled. So, I' ll start with this one: Mom Lost in Forest Gives Birth
Where it went wrong: -Ran out of Gas...not much can be said...if yer driving around town, ok, but, she made the mistake of taking a remote forest road low on gas -No cell Phone reception...I can look past this for the sheeple...but, this happened years before when a lady relied on the GPS in her phone, and it messed up on her, and her son ended up dying because of it. If your going into the wild, at the LEAST look at at a map of the area so you are familiar with landmarks/roads, and can effect self-rescue. If your not good at natural navigation methods, at least have a compass. What she did right: -Had enough gumption to start a signal fire; While lighting the woods on fire is not the preferred method, sometimes it is the ONLY method. The better option would have been the above, or at least let know some-one know where you're going, route, and when you plan to be back. And have alternate signaling methods. -Having the water and food, whether by choice or accident, at least she had that and was able to stay hydrated/fed to effect rescue.

Jeez. This chick is tough as a two dollar steak, for real. Sometimes being a hard mufucka is an acceptable substitute for preparation.

Or, vice-versa... www.foxnews.com/us/2015/07/10/grandfather-grandson-found-dead-in-arizona-desert-after-hike/?intcmp=latestnewsWater, water, water...all that mall-ninja crap don't mean shit if you don't have water (or means of procuring). At that old/young of an age, and a relatively short hike, water would have pulled them through. Who goes on a 5-6 mile hike in the desert in the middle of summer with-out adequate water???

You can go 30 days without food. Those are not happy days. However 24 hours in the heat will kill you. Water, water, water.

How much water is adequate for a day hike in 100+ degrees for 2? I think I'd bring 6x 16oz bottles each plus a 100oz Camelbak, a 1qt canteen and a Lifestraw. I only say those things because that's what I have in my supply to draw from.
As far as food, like GBM said isn't top priority, 4-5 Clif bars each should be enough to keep you at least alive for upwards of a week and isn't space prohibitive.

y/29861640/75-year-old-hiker-missing-for-days-found-safe-at-laurance-lakeWell, at least he knew how to build a shelter, and THOUGHT to build one. Mistake: Leaving his gear with his wife. That's why, at the minimum, I carry a small soft survival kit in my cargo pocket...so, if I need to leave, or lose my main pack, I at least have the basics...fire, shelter, navigation equipment, etc.

Yeah, kept going no matter what. That's for sure. Saved his wife and his own life in the process.
Too bad I don't live in Missoula Montana or I'd give him some business.
