(OM, I need to borrow your tinfoil hat for a minute)
Ok, so two French/Algerian brothers went and fought for a while for the Islamists in Syria, came back to France, got themselves nicely outfitted with rifles and gear, and pulled off a flawless hit on the editors and staff of some magazine. And their fire discipline and accuracy are epic. Got it.
But here is where it gets weird. One of the attackers DROPS HIS I.D. CARD in the car they stole to make their getaway? Then they don't have any cash and have to ROB A GAS STATION to fuel said getaway car? And instead of just going to ground in one of the many all-Muslim enclaves around the city, they make a break for some woods 30 miles from anyone who would want to help them. Then, decide to hole up in a printing company office, and start a hostage situation, because we all know how well those things always turn out.
Something just ain't adding up here. I apparently need to stop thinking about this.

They probably didn't want their ID's or cell phones on them when they did the assault, so they stuck them in the switch car for retrieval after and then in the heat of the moment forgot about them.
So it sounds like it's a mix of professional and amateurish. Professional in their planning and gun handling skills and amateurish in forgetting a critical detail and in their lack of an exit plan.
Robbing a gas station for money and supplies and hiding out in the forest is usually a last resort. They coulda had a nice comfy safe house.

Yeah, planning the attack was probably easy and gun handling was ok, not great, but they were brutal and effective against a foe who didn't fight back. None of their victims even put up the slightest of resistance.
They had some basic training, nothing great but they're operation plan was crap. I don't think they expected to get out of the initial shoot alive. Then they walked away without a scratch and weren't prepared with an escape plan. They were probably high too, that's pretty common with attackers, usually a mix of speed, anti anxiety and pain killers. Probably effected their judgement.
These guys aren't pros. They were wanna be rappers. I do think they were inspired and direct by others but they know the game, if they chatter about it, they get caught. So now, they just inpsire and promote lone wolves or small cells without top down controls. If you make yourself a sheep the wolves will eat you.

If you make yourself a sheep the wolves will eat you. Yea. That's probably it. They didn't think it would go well, and had no reason to think otherwise I suppose. After all, they are French.

....and they're all dead except the supermarket dudes girlfriend.
Funny detail, but the Jewish supermarket attacker did not hang up the phone properly after talking to Hebdo reporters allowing the police to overhear him and as he knelt to do his evening prayer the police stormed the building.

Best vantage point I've found. Damn, looked like a bunch of storm troopers trying to get their licks in.

Good thing that either A: his vest had front and back armor. GOOD armor... or B: The bullets are French made, so they hit him, but apologized immediately, and surrendered.

Is that some weird ultra short Krink I've just never seen before or something some underground gunsmith cobbled together? Apparently he also got ahold of some of that German Flecktarn body armor. In at least one test that stuff did alright against an assortment of pistol calibers. Flecktarn body armor ballistic tests (*Click*)
