Yeah, I don't want to knock the sling too hard. I just thought that a lot of the info translated from ancient sources didn't make sense considering that distances for the heaviest trebuchets used for demolishing fortifications are something like 2-300 yards and traction trebuchets are something like 30-60 yards.

This might explain some of it Redeyes. www.lloydianaspects.co.uk/weapons/sling.htmlSmaller, harder projectiles, bigger slings and training since infancy. I remember reading this article one time and it was talking about English longbows and how up until finding a shipwreck (I think it was the Mary Rose) modern scholars had thought that some of the claims of the distances shot were bullshit and just that, claims; that grew longer and longer as time went on. At any rate they found this shipwreck and some of war-bows they found were 6'2 to 6'11 and 125 to 175 lbs. the average height of someone born in those times were considerably shorter. Most of the primitive longbows today are much lighter poundage, not quite as long and the people generally bigger. It was an article like this on those bows, but a different one. www.archers-review.com/magazine-articles/june-2010-longbows-of-the-mary-roseSo my point is while I might be skeptical of the catapult sling in the hands of the vast majority of people alive today and don't think it would make that great of a weapon, but maybe we're missing some piece of the puzzle about how well they did in antiquity like was thought of the English longbow. Maybe the slingers were better, the projectiles not out of stream bed rocks and maybe they were much, much bigger. Then again maybe we're right to think the claims bullshit. I dunno. :Shrug
