The, "So, how ya' getting home?", thread reminded me of these new(ish) bikes I've seen. For those not familiar they look like this: They look like an improvement over the classic mountain bike, and ideal for getting home or bugging out if/when you can't find routes passable for vehicles with 4 wheels and/or you don't want to depend on gasoline/diesel. So, has anyone here had enough experience with these to give an informed opinion from a prepper's point of view? Myself, I'm thinking these would be fantastic in a prolonged scenario that DID NOT involve a high level of "tactical" issues. Think long term depression rather than Mad Max. What say you?

More pics. Wouldn't want to try and ride in sand like this with a standard bike-

AH! So that's where you where going with the "fatbikes" thing. Those things are just damn goofy. Yes, I've tried them, and I just can't wrap my head around them. They're like the king of the one trick pony - they don't know what they want to be, but whatever it is they want to be on soft ground. Riding them on pavement is exercise, riding them on hardpack is mildly better, but they do work well on sand/loose crap. Surly was the pioneer for them, if memory serves, but you can find them all over (Origin has them, and a few others). I think even Schwinn has a model as well as a few beach cruisers. They look cool as all get out, let me tell you. The future, IMO, is cyclocross. How can you say no to a carbon framed racing bike that's not mud/dirt/life shy? nXP
