#7 Ok, so the holidays are over and Jiu Jitsu class started again. Just when I think I know how to do something right I learn better ways. Side Control I thought I knew you. So apparently you are also supposed to roll your shoulder into your opponent to torque their head uncomfortably while putting your weight on them. Then we learned how to stop someone from torquing the head by pressing the bony part of your forearm into their neck aka posting. Then we learned how to submit someone who is posting with the americana, straight armbar, and kimura. We also learned how to armbar someone underneath you when they hug you with one hand. Fun class. ETA That is not posting. Posting is putting your arm out so someone can't roll you. I forgot the name.

#8 We reviewed all the escapes and learned a basic mount defense and the counter to the mount defense. We also learned the defense against the kimura from side control and the escape from the defense. Then we learned the counter to the defense of the kimura which is called the arm triangle. My rolling partner thought the arm triangle should be my move. He is probably right because all you have to do to get the arm triangle is get one arm in the right place move to the correct side and be heavy. I have no problem with being heavy.

#9 We had our test today. I got some moves right and some wrong. Maybe I did ok. I will find out Monday. We all rolled against someone at the end of the test. I attempted a key lock or americana but couldn't get it. Other than that the whole thing is a blur. I am kinda sleep deprived from all the PM shifts I have been working lately. The only guy who managed a submission got a pretty nice gi choke. After the test we learned mount and the counter to mount shrimp to guard. Next time I roll I am going to try to get out of mount into guard and kimura somebody.

#10 I passed the test so I have an electrical tape stripe on my white belt now. We practiced cross choke from mount.
I was rolling against a much stronger opponent so I was having a rough time. The video has some slick technique. I will try that next time. We also learned the escape from the cross or collar choke. It is called the oompa or umpa or something. Basically once he has one hand on my collar I grab the inside of his elbow with my hand that is facing it, brace my other elbow against my knee and put that hand against his elbow. Look over my left shoulder, bridge and roll him on his back and try to stay with him and end up in mount. My partner kept putting his knee up which probably wasn't what the teacher wanted but worked damn well. I should have just tried to shrimp out. If he isn't going to stick with the program I shouldn't either.

#11 today. We were practicing escapes from someone punching you in mount. What we did was push with our knee in the center of their buttocks which pushes them forward so we can grab them around the shoulders and scoot them down. We hold on to them and when they try to strike sideways or force their arm under our arm or across our throat we trap the arm, trap the leg and bridge and roll, ending up on top of them or in a position to get side control.

#12 We mostly practiced retaining mount and what to do if your arm gets trapped. We practiced how to trap the arm and briefly practiced what to do with it once you have it. We very quickly practiced guard sweeps. Then the bulk of the class was flow drills with the person on bottom attempting to trap the arm and the person on top trying to use the correct technique to get their arm back.
ETA I almost forgot the exciting part. I rolled with a more experienced white belt at the end of the class and started on the bottom. He very nearly put me in an arm bar. I managed to turn on my side and crook my elbow before he could get it set then fought my way up to one knee and was able to grab my arm in danger with my other hand. Then I got in mount for the win. When I was on top I went for the cross collar choke. I got one hand in but got swept and rolled before I could get the other.

Dang it Redeyes, man that sounds like a fun class to be in. What's the "name" of whatever it is you're doing - I want to see if there's anything even remotely close to it around here. I need to blow off so steam in a more constructive way than shoveling snow.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. It is fun. Ha, if you get your buds to roll with you in the snow get a video of it. Good training. #13 We practiced mount escapes: 1. The arm trap bridge and roll as if someone is: punching you, double hand stiff arm choking you, going for the cross collar choke, one arm headlock, forearm across your neck. 2. What to do if someone is hooking your legs AKA small shrimp: Get one leg out, then use that leg to unhook the other leg, then roll on your side, then shrimp out and hook his leg then shrimp to guard. 3. What to do if someone has you in mount and is only trying to maintain position AKA big shrimp: bridge, brace one of his hips with your arms, big bridge, then shrimp your butt out to the opposite side of the hip you braced. That was it. This class was mostly about building muscle memory. I had some gas left over after class so I did a half mile sprint walk. It was mostly a walk.

#13 Finally was able to get back to class today. I had a bad cold or a mild case of the flu. I didn't want to get anyone else sick so I skipped 5 practice sessions. We practiced back control and escapes. The first thing we did was the escaper got on their hands and knees and their partner got on their back. The escaper dropped his head to the ground and pushed up with his legs to get their partner to post both arms on the ground. Then the escaper crawled backwards out from under their partner. Then we rolled around with our partner on our back to get used to it. Then we practiced the dog butt escape. Your partner is trying to get you in the rear naked choke. You scoot your butt down like a dog with worms then unhook one of your legs and trap your partners leg that is still hooked with your arm and upper body. Then you get a shoulder under one of their legs and use your head to push them on their back and then get them in side control. After that we practiced the bow and arrow choke.
After that we rolled. I was weak as a kitten, got submitted twice and wasn't able to submit even once. Oh well, next time.
