Earlier this month I was cleaning my gen 1 Sig 516 short stroke piston AR and noticed for the first time some unusual and excessive wear in the upper receiver. I have fired about 1K through this rifle roughly half brass half steel cased ammo with no malfunctions, jams, or any other issues. If this is just a cosmetic thing I can live with it but I don't recall ever seeing the kind of even and deep gauges in an AR upper before. I don't know if this is a developing problem or something I should be worried about, Sig customer service sucks hard, my 30+minutes on hold calls get dropped and the Sig customer service e-mails I have found and sent pictures to have not been responded to. Is this kind of wear normal? I can't find any wear marks on the BCG and don't know what could be causing this, maybe the aluminum was too soft for my upper?

It does look like a fair bit of wear for only 1,000 rds. In the life of a gun 1,000 rds is like nothing.
I'd keep bugging Sig about it til I got an answer one way or the other. An email a day until they finally answered me.
Have you tried scrubbing that black streak that runs midline down the length of the top of the receiver? Maybe it's just a streak rather than a groove, I can't tell from the pics.

I have tried srubbing those spiralled streaks in the top of the receiver but they arent comming off. I have seen some threads where AR owners are saying that some side to side wear is normal for most ARs to break in and find their groove, by the time Sig replies I can probably run a few mags and look for any further wear to test this. Yeah, that's classic reciever galling. In other words, when the piston smacks the carrier the carrier tilts and rubs the reciever. Not a big deal and I'd not worry about it. It's really just cosmetic.

I was looking for carrier tilt in the wrong place, I thought I would see it in the buffer tube before anywhere else. It already has an H buffer, would going lighter or heavier (if there is such a thing) do anything to reduce this?

I don't think a buffer would make a difference. I'd just put some grease on the gall spots and not worry about it.
