LOL....I was reading the other day that Harvard currently has a 35 billion (with a "B") $$$ dollar $$$ endowment.....and at a 5% annual rate of return, they could let all their students attend for free, and still have enough left over to add another 1.3 billion dollars to the endowment every year. Sounds like the only "fair" thing to do is to redistribute that Ivy League endowment money to the struggling schools....and take some of Alabama's national championships and give them to non SEC schools. |

Years ago I had a butter bar come out to the flight line to "see what we do at night and lend a hand". I handed him a flashlight, he left 10 minutes later. |

I feel it is my duty to teach my kids how to, well, be productive and self-assured members of society. Even if society is crumbling around them. Someone will have to pick up the pieces when this is all over. |

Is it entirely, horribly wrong that when the wife and I discussed how many children we want to have one of the reasons I gave for wanting at least two of each gender was in case one of them doesn't make it to adulthood, as I intend to let them take risks the way our grandfathers and great-grandfathers did. Without constant helicopter hovering adult supervision.
Real chemistry sets.
Hunting.
Boating.
Working with big heavy stuff.
Educated risks, not blind foolishness, but without swaddling them in bubble wrap. I want them to look before they leap, but I don't want to program them to never take that leap....

As a kid around 12 years old me and the other kids in the one neighbor hood split wood with ax,maul ,wedge for fun. They didnt let us use the chain saws with out adults. Other neighbor hood we played tackle football with out pads and helmets, we rode bikes with out pads ,helmets or brakes some times. We would build go cart type things and ride them. Mom and dad were like cool be back when the street light comes on.
We also got spanked when we did bad things. I said it at work America is raising a bunch of pussified kids, we have to harden them the fuck up.

Five or six of us would meet-up at a friend's house on Friday afternoon with our tents, sleeping bags, .22s, & machetes (& cigarettes, that's what knucklehead 12 & 13 year olds do).....and we'd disappear into the woods about a mile away and not reappear until Sunday afternoon. |
