www.live5news.com/story/24375257/armed-robbery-arrestThief uses squash to silence gunshots fired into gas station Posted: Jan 06, 2014 2:06 PM EST Updated: Jan 06, 2014 2:23 PM EST JAMES ISLAND, SC (WCSC) - Investigators say a thief used a squash to silence the shots he fired from his gun into a gas station on James Island. On Sunday at 2 a.m., Charleston County deputies responded to the Sunoco gas station on 2019 Maybank Hwy for an alarm activation. When deputies arrived they noticed that the front left window of the entrance door was broken. An incident report states that video surveillance caught an unknown subject walking on the property and pointing a gun with a squash on the end of it, and fire what appears to be two shots at the window. Authorities say the video shows the subject then taking a cinder block and throwing it through the window. The subject is then seen taking a lottery ticket case. The store manager said 24 booklets of lottery tickets totaling $6,000 were taken. The sheriff's office is asking anyone with information to call (843) 202-1700 or Crime Stoppers at (843) 554-1111. Would that even work that well?
Seen some guys on YouTube using potatoes and unless it's a .22 it's always the same result, slightly muffled (pretty much not worth the effort), the muzzle end of the potato explodes and the rest of it goes flying downrange.

I would think it would work better than a potato. Squash generally have a seed cavity which could be a more effective baffle imo. I would think it would still only work once and be a handful of hot mess after that.

I really want to comment, but I'm not sure if I can add anything to the discussion of sound suppression via squash...

It really depends on caliber but any medium with any density will suppress sound. A towel, a potatoe, a water melon, etc. Generally, 22LR is best for vegetables since there is little muzzle blast. Huh, I wonder if anyone has tried to register a squash? ATF would be full of da faq.
The traditional suppressor is just a metal tube with baffles that capture and slow the "explosion" or blast at the end of the muzzle and turns it into heat.

Could it be said that it "squashed" the sound profile? Assault veggies......

Careful gentlemen, if a shoestring can be a MG then a squash is, logically, a can.
