The rei baselayers are nice, I've had a few of their shirts. But, honestly, those surplus ones you linked to are among my favorites for lightweight baselayers. The pair I bought and used in the military (this was before they were issued, er) are still in heavy rotation and have been my go-to for years.

Bought a pair of Salomon XA Pro Mid GTX Hiking Boots/Shoes. It's like a half boot. Have a pair of Merrell Moabs that have lasted for 4+ years, but they split on the side awhile back and despite my super-gluing them they leak a little now when it rains/walking through puddles. They could still be my mow the lawn footwear, but I need a new pair and I figured I'd try something new.

I have always wanted to try Salomons. I have gone thru three pairs of Merrel Moab ventilators in the last 5 years...I think I will be ready to try something new when this pair goes. My current pair hopefully lasts a little longer since I no longer live near the S.App foothills and hike like I used to (which is sad), that, and my daily footwear are Justin workboots--you know, for work.
Work--the blight of the drinking class.

Yeah, I love Merrells. I figured I'd give these a try though. According to the reviews they're supposed to be pretty good. Hope I didn't make a mistake.
One way or the other I'll update later and say how they're holding up. At least the Salomon's I bought are black. They'll go with more clothing. I don't really care that much, but my wife does.
Justin's seem like they hold up pretty well. Almost all the guys I know out here have at least one pair.

One of these days I plan on reviewing my work attire. It is much more heavy duty than my Gucci backpacking gear!

I'm pretty happy with the surplus M-1951 wool pants I picked up online. Depending on what size you wear and who's carrying them in stock I've seen the price range from $15 a pair to $50. Even at the high end they are a great bargain for what you get.

If by "true to size" you mean that a 36 inch waist is really a 36 inch waist, then yes if you measure your waist just below your navel, NOT down where you wear jeans. These are high waisted pants, not low or medium waisted. I'd also recommend some button on suspenders....the pants are set up for them and it's way comfy.
I swear I must have been trying to corner the market on these. Got a bunch with 34 waists before I realized how much weight I'd gained...returning stuff from over here is a PITA, so I just ordered more with a 37 waist (loose on me). I probably have around 16 pairs of these now, enough for a lifetime, most vacuum sealed to keep them out of the reach of moths.
I can't emphasize enough, these things are sewn with more care, quality, and attention to detail than most modern custom suits. They're also tougher than nails.

Have any of y'all tried the Ribz front packs? Awesome stuff. I have a medium in camo that I keep my primary firemaking kit, gloves, headlamp, spare batteries, backup knife (mora), compass and would be a great place to pack your pistol so its not jamming you when you have your waist belt over it. www.ribzwear.com/Yes, Nutnfancy, the man who can talk for an hour straight about his fanny pack has a 30 minute review:

Been wearing those Salomon GTX's, that Salomon Quicklace system is either the most retarded thing I've ever seen or really innovative. Haven't decided yet. That rolling up the laces technique and sticking it in the pouch of the tongue is a bit strange though. You're not saving any time over regular laces. Instead of spending the time pulling, knotting and then double knotting you're now spending that time rolling the laces up and stuffing it in that pouch. I'm used to laces and side-zips. Definitely takes some getting used to

Lowkey, have any 34" pants you mentioned a couple posts up you'd like to sell?
Asked this awhile back but no response..any thoughts on the GI goretex parka? I have one in DCU and in woodland, but haven't worn them in heavy rain yet. So far I do like them a lot, though.
