Well, this won't be the first time I've necro'ed a thread. I've a sidebar to bring up inspired by the "Trigger: on or off" discussion here. At what point did we (collectively) start muttering such things as 'Booger hook off the bang switch", "Never shoot unless you've visually ID'd your target"*, and any of the other numerous adages as some sort of mantra? Seriously, often it sounds to me like members in a religious cult racing to see who can be first to utter scraps of dogma. When did common sense, thinking, experience and judgement end up taking a backseat to reflexive and slavish repetition of slogans? Okay, now that I've uttered heresy feel free to erect a stake and light a bonfire. Discuss.. *Generally a good idea, but I take exception to the use of the absolute "never". My limited experience has taught me that there may be occasions (thankfully rare) where shooting at (i.e. aiming by) sounds, dust, may be needed even with the risks entailed.

From a defensive standpoint, if the muzzle's clear of the holster and oriented downrange, my finger's on the bangswitch.
The gun didn't come out for no reason, as soon as it's clear of me and pointed in the area that I want it to be you can be dang certain that it'll be ready to bark at a moments notice.

If I'm pointing the gun at something it's obviously something I feel comfortable shooting or else I wouldn't be pointing it there. When moving the safety is automatically on and my finger clear of the trigger.

Here's my take. The finger should be off the trigger and the gun should be the the retention or SUL position while actively looking for threats. I believe you should scan and identify the target before pressing out. That way you can scan with the minimal flagging. Once you identify a threat as you press out of clear the holster the finger should begin going on the trigger about 3/4 of the way out then once the sights are aligned and the decision to shoot has been made then press the trigger to the frame. Lather, repeat as necessary at the trigger reset.
