I'm going to tell you what's wrong with the photo above. Instructor is not delivering knees, elbows, and verbal onslaught at the same time as the defense . Even though the attacker above is a moment away from being horizontal like the guy in the back, I also come from the school of trying to do precise control of the knife like this is generally wasted time in a 'real world' (TRUUU STORRAAAY) scenario. If the attacker is really attacking they tend to use the knife like a sewing machine with a billion pumps per second (this may be exaggerated for effect). Unless you are Neo, you aren't catching that shit. Use specific blocks as best you can while delivering unrelenting violence, and hope you have time to patch yourself up before you bleed to death. Best way to win? Don't get this close to someone with a knife without a weapon yourself. But, shit happens. Mitigate the knife attack and do so much damage to the attacker he forgets he has it. Knife attacks scare me. There is no easy win. Somehow they are more horrific in my mind than a close range pistol, mostly because I think we've all seen how fucked up most people's aim is
