And I was listening to NPR and low/behold they want to federally license 3D printers. Sorry guys, that's going to be a hurdle. Seriously, what is the inclination to regulate and license everything. Technology is going to free us, there is nothing they can do about it. The old tired strong paternal methods of governance are in there last gasps. They belong in the dust bin of history. /Rant.

That's pretty freaking awesome! I love that this technology is becoming available. This is pretty much a slap in the face to statist gun grabbers everywhere. I love it. I've had a few discussions with such people in the past year and when bringing this up as a side issue they're literally left speechless that this is even possible. I'm also excited that they're able to print metal guns. Does away with one of the major drawbacks of printing your own gun, longer term reliability. I wonder what kind of printer they used. Did a search and came up with several other articles ( including *this* one), but couldn't find any info on the actual printer.

I think the real thing that everyone is missing in this; those guys have a Federal Firearms License to manufacture that pistol. The ATF has already said they were going to go after people who did this without federal permission. And, if it came to The End, there's a lot of electricity and time and materials and such that goes into making this thing; resources that we probably will not have available to us. Also, the springs were all bought from an outside resource.

Unless something has changed in the last few days, under federal law it is legal for persons who are NOT licensed firearms manufacturers to make firearms as long as those firearms are for personal use and not for sale. I can't see where printing a handgun would be different than machining a handgun in a legal sense.

Do you have a link of any kind saying that? Just curious, first I've heard of anything like that. According to the GCA of '68 people are still able to legally manufacture guns. There's that undetectable guns law that's set to expire that Chuckie Schumer is trying to renew, but AFAIK it hasn't happened. And to the progressive who seem inclined to seek power for power I'd like to point them to the 9th amendment. Which reads "The enumeration in the Constitution, of certain rights, shall not be construed to deny or disparage others retained by the people." And the 10th as well "The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people." Quite clear, they're not supposed to be doing this.
