Just knock it off with an ax. Nah, transition to axe. Fuck it, make axe the primary. Odin will be pleased.

Ok, so... All of my gunfighting was done with an M16A4 with the issued RCO/ACOG. Flip up sights were not an option for us. Remove carrying handle, add RCO, shoot bad guys. Military issue optics are designed for alot of abuse--something like an RCO being king in my book. I don't recall anybody I know ever being in a situation where their optic (either RCO or some dudes still had throwback Aimpoints) failed, hell, one of my homies took a round in his RCO and it was still funtional! I do remember some platoons and companys having to keep their carrying handle on them, just in case. Many of them just mounted it somewhere on the rail so it wouldn't get lost. This was likely more of an accountability of serialized gear policy instead of tactical mindset. That said, the thought of back-up irons never once occurred to me. When I was issued an M4 for a later deployments, we did have flip-up sights issued. It was a matech? Put it on there, never zeroed it or even flipped it up. Now, that was my military background on iron sights. Keep in mind, too, that if something were to go wrong, I had homies to watch my back if something went down. Now, self defense? Not really an option. So I see the need for back ups in case something goes "bump" in the night, you reach for your carbine, and realize you left your Eotech on after a range session. All of my personal AR's have iron sights. The concept is sound and every weapon, IMO, needs to have an inherent means to accurately shoot it. However, if someone has a non-battery optic or battery-miser Aimpoint and a solid, quality mount...I will not flame them for lack of back ups. So, I guess when I was in situations where having back-ups would have really mattered...it didn't. Now, I use them because it's no big deal to buy a cheap magpul flip-up and forget about it--and I often forget to turn off my Eotech after a range day A basic quality AR with a sling and Aimpoint PRO (OK, probably a light, too) is more rifle and optics than most people will ever need, SHTF or not.
