"Trunk" gun is going to be a bit academic for me in my new place. Boat gun will replace it, and it's warranted...more for animals/survival issues should something go pear shaped (coastal boating...not talking about blue water here).
But back on automotive trunk guns: I've always seen them as something you stick in the trunk based on your circumstances. If where you live has recently become a simmering kettle ripe for massive violent rioting I'd suggest keeping the "tennis racket" in the front seat with you if you can't simply leave the area. Going on a long ass road trip with a good bit of it through very rural areas (think the US west), throw one in the back.
That's about it; when out and about in rural areas or in times of high tensions. In any case it's not staying in a car unless the car is in a locked garage.
Worried about getting car jacked....look to your pistol and wear a vest.

Yeah, if someone wants to do it cool. I won't bag on them. I've just personally been doing it less and less.
Now for the most part there are only two kinds of situations or events that'll happen for me to stick a loaded long gun in my truck.
1) Hog or deer hunt down south of here.
2) There's a bunch of shit on the news that indicates that there might be incidents of rioting with car windshields being caved in and the occupants being dragged out Reginald Denny-style to get beaten in the head and suffer brain damage where you/they will end up learning to re-tie your/their shoes and relearning their ABC's or just get beaten to death.
There's not many self defensive situations in civilian life that can't be solved with the quick and appropriate application of semiautomatic pistol fire and the foot on the right pedal jammed to the floor.
