Careful with the massive hours. I've been doing 6 and 7 twelve hour shifts for yen years and in all honestyit takes a brutal toll over time. I'd advise not going any further down that particular rabbit hole. Word. Shift work and screwed up sleeping schedules are apparantly a major contributer to the epidemic of heart disease in the U.S. fire service. Chronic levels of stress hormones caused by lack of sleep/interrupted sleep lead to inflammation and artery issues, etc. Even controlling for the fact that many of my colleagues are fat-asses, sleep problems and odd hours are a huge issue.

I'd advise not going any further down that particular rabbit hole. Yeah, I tried 72 one week and that was too much. Sixty seems ok for now. The people I work with have been making an effort not to run me around too much. If it gets to be too rough I will just sign up for less overtime. They are hiring a new person so while I will probably still be able to make nearly the same hours, my work load will be cut by 1/3rd to a half some nights.

A good example right here...Dannus, you've known me online for a few years now. Would you agree that the "quality" of my posting has decreased slightly over the last few years? Personally I suspect so, and attribute that to the cumulative fatigue of a decade of working 6 and seven days a week in 12 or more hour shifts EVERY WEEK, EVERY MONTH, EVERY YEAR. I should at this point be a walking study in sleep deprivation Seriously, do not so as I have done. If you have to pull the extra hours for $$, fine, but don't do it more than a month or so unless it's actually life or death. I'm cognizant that I may be working myself into an early grave (so to speak), but I'm both in a rut as well as in a tricky position.

B35 - good on ya for working off dip. That stuff is a PITA to get out of your mind, but you'll be better for it. I dipped through the 20's, got married, had kids and quit. Hardest part was finding something other than gum to chew on (went through a lot of baby carrots). That Smoke Mountain Snuff is okay, it's not perfect - but it does have some hot pepper for the burn and it feels like the real deal, good for when you just want something there but not the nic. So it's snuff that doesn't have any nicotine in it? That's a trip. Thanks for the tip, never heard of it. It's pretty difficult cutting out nicotine altogether. Supposedly harder to kick then heroin long term. - +1 on the super long hours at work. I did that for years and years. First to get into a house and then to do my part to help get my wife through school. I mean ridiculous hours, 72 hours within 72 hours kind of thing. Would have been better to more live within our means, reduce living costs and just work a bit of overtime here and there. It takes a toll on your body. Developed sleep apnea from the long hours and stress and had to get a UPPP plus tonsillectomy about 6 months ago or wear a CPap machine at night for the rest of my life. Screw that, I opted for the surgery. It blew. Supposed to be pretty much the most painful surgery there is and re-coup time is typically 3 weeks to a month.

Supposedly harder to kick then heroin long term. Yup. www.smokeysnuff.com/index.htmlUses corn silk and molasses for the body, and cayenne for the burn. It's not perfect, but for me it was more about the fact that I was missing something there more than the nicotine. Another option for tobacco free snuff is: http s ://hoochsnuff.com/ (doesn't like the secure server for some reason) I've never used this product, but overall consensus from those that have used both SM and Hootch was that Hootch not as "sweet" as SM and not as "sticky" (understandable as it's not using molasses), and with the rough cut more like long cut. It wasn't around when I quit, SM was the only game in town so that what I used. Nicotine withdrawls sucked, don't get me wrong, but the hard part for me was stopping the "go through the motion" part. Hell I even missed the uncomfortable circle in my back pocket for a while. If not having the tin/dip doesn't bother you but the nic is what's kicking your ass, keep going the patch/gum route. If you need something more than just the patch, this is a decent enough alternative IMO. nXP

Very apropros thread, GM. I've got a firefighter buddy who is a huge history buff getting married in mid-October. We have a WWII museum ship here in my little burg (an LST), and he's getting married on the ship. It's also a 'period' wedding, guests are encouraged to wear 40's / 50's style clothes. Pretty cool! Well, USMC dress blues haven't changed that much since - - well, forever. The blues I got issued in the 90's are still pretty much the blues they were wearing at the turn of the century, so they would be period appropriate. The problem? I WAS ABOUT 25 POUNDS LIGHTER WHEN THE FINAL FITTING WAS DONE ON MY PURTY BLUE UNIFORM! I did a try on the other night and I probably have to lose at least 15-20 pounds to comfortably squeeze back into that uniform. Luckily, I've got nearly 2 months to do that and have been looking for a real reason to jump start some weight loss. The formula is clean up my diet, do cardio everyday instead of every other day (I will compliment my normal running schedule with swimming, easier on an old man's knees) and lay off the free weights. Calisthenics and plyometric workouts will be the plan of the day. I'll post updates if anything exciting happens, and if successful might even post a picture of me and the bride all slicked up to go to the wedding, you lucky devils! Well, the wedding is in a few weeks, and I did a fitting of the uniform last night. WIN! I can actually sit down, bend over in it, the whole nine yards. I couldn't even come close to buttoning the damn thing when I started. I'm down almost exactly 20 pounds from the time I posted the above. It has not been fun. I don't even know if it's been particularly healthy. I know that I've lost quite a bit of muscle mass - - I stopped lifting at all, have just been doing push ups, sit ups, running, etc. That obviously translates into a loss of strength, and while being lean and mean is good, sometimes my job simply calls for raw horsepower. I know I've lost horsepower. Cardio is better, though - - I'm regularly running 4+ miles without much stress. So, AFTER the wedding, I'm going to go back to the weight room, and start eating a little bit more. Hopefully I can keep the body fat down and start building up the guns again. Being skinny isn't worth it if I blow my back out the next time I'm trying to lift some fatty out of their shitty, crowded apartment.

I've dropped down on my pull ups. I'm down to 10 for first set, 8 for second and 7 for third. Don't know what happened but it could have something to do with the bench pressing I've been doing in between sets. Oh, how's my bench press you ask? My max is 235 lbs for 4 reps. I start at 135 and go up by 20 lbs until I hit 235. That's a few pounds over my body weight, pretty pleased with that.
I also need to do more cardio.

At a crossroads.
Really want to get an Airdyne (CL is proving difficult, but some of the recycle stores have them for more than I'd prefer for a non-maintained unit I'd have to take apart and cleanup/restore), but what I really want is a community to participate in for a little bit.
Local box wants a bill plus for a month. Thinking hard on it, would be nice to not feel like 80% all the time after work....

Looked like one of a pair of idiots out playing tennis for 2hrs yesterday in 45F, overcast and rainy weather on the outdoor courts.
But I won the match, damnit.

WOOT! Finally scored something worth while from Craigslist.
Picked up a MINT Schwinn Airdyne for 50.00 and some labor from a little old lady that just wanted it out of her basement. The thing seriously looks like it was bought yesterday; doesn't smell of cats, no slop in the chain/bearing sets, foam handles are still cushey, manuals - and the electronics work! Not bad at all for a 20 year old bike...
My little white Pain Machine will be put to good use as winter approaches. Even Mrs NXP has shown interest in it - bonus.
Now to start saving some money for a Rogue Yoke 2 with bumper/bar set.

Be proud. 25 chin ups in one set, or broken into multiple sets? Regardless, that's impressive at any age. Curious, what do you weigh?
