Finally got back to Jiu Jitsu today. Spent the whole morning struggling with drum brakes. Honda, people have been making drum brakes forever. Nobody needed you to reinvent the fucking wheel. Don't buy a standard drum brake tool kit for Hondas, the only useful tool is the adjustment spoon. Look up Nutzaboutbolts channel on Youtube. Anyway, so after that I needed to blow off some steam. Good thing I got over that nasty cold I have been having. I worked mainly armbars and armbar escapes from guard. Stack and pass baby.

Honda brakes just suck period. I've had 3 Hondas, and all of them have been on the special side when it comes to dumb quirks that should be a standard that for some reason aren't. Still not as bad a Volkswagen, but still a PITA.
Been working with a theraband and some lacross balls all week on the bum shoulder (I suspect it's that stupid minor stabilization muscle that attaches to the lower scapula as I've got no issues with rotation), and thankfully things are improving. I've layed off lifting heavy things until next week, at which point I'll probably deload for a week and then work back up again just to make sure everything's still solid. Rehabing sucks, but it's way better than the alternative.

Pack is sitting at 50 pounds right now, did 6 miles yesterday (flat, paved) with no problemo. A little sore in the shoulders and back today, however. I'm averaging a 4 mph pace regardless of trail or paved road, but the trails are not killers as far as hill work.
Did 3 miles a few days ago as far as running in the heat, but I haven't been able to do the running as regularly as I would have liked. Not too down about it, though, because I've had feet problems (plantar fasciitis) in the past when I overdid it on roadwork, and since I'm doing the rucking as well I suppose taking it easier is better than overdoing it.
Also, up week 3 day 2 of the 200 squats program. On the 'max' portion, I'm up to 75. I'm a little cross-eyed by the time I get to the high 60's, but could actually probably make it to 100 before I just flat couldn't lift my fat ass up anymore.
Operation New Mexico Hike is on time and on target, at least for now. Also, I'm much more comfortable with my GHB and plan if I get stranded on the road from the house. My GHB only weighs about 25 pounds, and my tentative plan of being able to put in 20 miles per day on the road with that size pack seems pretty damn do-able at this point. I never figured it would be a huge overreach, but it's nice to know you can work you plan.

Back on the horse - Deloaded everything but squats by 10% and started over. Did some Cuban presses to get inner shoulder workings stable and toughened up and started back in. Lovely pain, but a good pain and not screaming shoulder agony. Actually got a good sweat on this morning. They didn't have the fans/AC on yet, so it was a humidity thing no doubt, but it felt nice to THINK I was busting ass and taking names.

Today was CV axle day. Replaced my MBC last night, which was way easier than I thought it was going to be. I have the driver's side done already and was making good progress on the passengers side when I got rained out. Had a little bit of trouble getting the stakes out of the axle nuts and made the mistake of breaking off a screwdriver end in both of them. I am special. I am also fucking surgical with a grinder. Ground out the stakes and took out broken screwdriver ends out, then broke the nuts loose with a 25" breaker bar and a 5' cheater. Jiu Jitsu in the morning. ETA Rain let up for a minute. Got the other side done. All I need to do is stake the nuts. Tomorrow, I flush transmission, power steering and coolant. After that I will start on the air conditioning.

Back on the horse and feelin' good.
Weight back up 5%, shoulder feels strong, lowerback felt like ass after doing Romy DL's and quads were not happy with Bulgy Squats.
I, on the other hand, was very happy up until the point I realized that today was THURS, and not WEDS - apparently my rest day went past so fast I didn't even register it happened. That sucks.
Back to bench and other fun tomorrow!

/Random gym madness this morning. Sumdood (young, must have been just out of HS or close to it) was in working out all decked out in PL gear. Full off wrist wraps, compression knee sleeves, belt as wide as his back, Do-win shoes - the whole 9. Would have been less if he had some mass on him, but dood was thin - like worse than me in highschool thin, and I was a gust of wind away from dismemberment. Eh, whatev's, he's got the gear he must be gonna use it. Nope. Goes over to the curl bar and slaps on a set of 5's and proceeds to superset TWICE, usin' that good ol' body rockin' momentum. Thinking he must be warmed up now, is head heading over to the squat rack? Ah yes, here come squats. Nope. Barbell shrugs. Superset. Wat? Wanders over to the bubbler, wipes brow, un-gears and heads out the door. 20min. Weird. Anywho, kickass day for me. Sweated it up hard, got some new numbers for bench, rows and as a personal happy - added 10# to a weight belt for dips. Hells yes. Actually ran out of time as I have a hardstop in the morning to get to work, so I need to start getting my happy ass up even earlier it seems if I'm gonna rock it all the way through.

I went to jiu jitsu today. Worked on tightening up my side control escapes. We rolled at the end of class and I got my first legitimate submission on a resisting partner at my level. Straight armbar from side control. This is almost exactly the move I used.

Knew it would happen sooner or later - killed a set of shoes finally, thanks gym. Kinda/sorta my own fault, I love those really light, breathable zero drop shoes with minimal foam underfoot and not a whole lot holding the see through fabric together. Blew out the side on a DL, and the footbed had long gone weird as I tend to push out from my heels on squats. I've got another set in the box for work, but I think it's time to move on to something more dedicated to lifting heavy things over and over again. Sooooo - exciting day, new shoes fo' NXP! (I love getting new shoes, have since I was a kid - mostly because I never got them until my old set was nothing more than rubber bits and gnarled leather) Got a set of these on the cheap: XF moniker aside, they're basically oldschool WL shoes - lower and more rigid sole than Chucks with a stiffer all leather heel cup for stability. Lo top because I'm weird and hate crap on my ankles (or GOGOGO mobility!). Sadly mine aren't cool ninja black -I'm a cost/performance/okay with ugly things kinda dude.

Did about 10 miles today on some hilly local trails. 60 pound pack, 90 degrees, humidity was through the roof. Took about 3.5 hours, came home and mowed the lawn. I feel like a goddamn bus has run over me.

Been wearing the shoes now for a few sessions. LOVE THEM. They look a little dorky, but damned if they don't plant you solid for squats/deads/bench. I like them so much I may order a set for spare, which is an oddity for me - but the way my luck works the moment I really like something they discontinue it. A million times better than my squishy zero drops and way more solid than Chucks with more than enough toe wiggle room for my wide feet. Love'em.
Now on to weight lifting fun -
Squats - Been kind of sticking with some of my 85%+ lifts, so this last week I dropped to a 70% load and focused on speed work, mostly 4x12 ripping the bar up from ass to grass as fast as I can safely lift it. Yesterday I upped it to 75% and went 4x10, planning an increase%, reduce rep on my way up. I'm hoping by end of next week to be back in the 85% range with more speed under the weight to see if I can blast past the plateau and knock that total up.
Bench - Been sucking on the program I was using. When in doubt and disgruntled at totals, go Russian. So that's what I did. On week two of a modified Sheiko set (oh the pain), but results so far are very positive. Hoping to get that total up on week 4 and then re-adjust the programming.
DL - I've started to see two very different but important areas to focus on (posterior chain / breaking ground) that need addressing. Grips strength is improving (chalk helps more than I realized), but I need to work on the entire system as a whole. Working on the PC first, this morning was deficit SLDL with chains. Why chains? Because I didn't want to screw around with breaking ground issues but wanted that sweet, sweet pain at the top of the lift. Chains get heavier the higher you go as you put more links into the air, so the two combined chains added to 50# on top at lockout, but only 10# on the floor lift off. That and you sound metal has all hell banging away SLDL's dragging the chains through the reps. Primal scream of agony optional, but still very appropriate. Bonus points if Ozzy's on the overhead...
Little celebration of the day - weighted dips are now at 4x8, 20#s, muthafucka. Soon to start weighted pullups.

Achievement Unlocked - 3 plate DL for reps, OH grip no straps or chalk.
WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!
Been busting ass, it was awesome to see how fast that weight came up AND I held it at lock out for 4 seconds.
Programming - it works folks. Now I need to recalculate for a new 1RM.
