I just also understand that generally the law of the land legally prevents such actions and can't really sanction that sort of thing.

Yeah, I knew where it was from and the point you were trying to make.
That is the jacked up thing about where society is headed. Someone that steps out their house and hurts or kills someone that invaded their home and shot one of their friends in a robbery attempt is prosecuted and possibly sent to prison. I don't really care if the dude's a drunk or not.
It is what it is though and until that changes that's what you basically have to do unless you want to bust out a shovel and practice the shoot-shovel-shut up method.
Just do whatever you gotta do quick from the get go.
