They moved everything up to the second floor. But if 16 more feet of flooding occurs, it's not going to matter.
My sister said she has her BOB ready to go with most of their important stuff when the boats come to evac them.

They are staying at one of my sister's friend's parent's house. Ironically, they left the area when Harvey got up to a cat 3.
I called AllState to put a claim in for my sister's 2 cars (which are under 10 feet of water). Seriously, if you have AllState, get another insurance company. It was like talking to a bag of hammers. I gave them her policy number and they were asking questions like
AS: "What is your sister's name?"
ME: "Isn't that on the policy?"
AS: "What year is the Hyundai?"
ME: "Isn't that on the policy?"
AS: "Has an adjuster been out yet?"
ME: "Not unless he has scuba gear and no fear of alligators."
AS: "Has the vehicle been towed?"
ME: "Not unless a submarine showed up."
AS: "Was anyone injured?"
ME: "Listen, the vehicle was parked in their driveway and then the floods came and now it's 10 feet under water. Get off your script and use some common sense."
AS: "OK, here is an explanation of the policy"
ME: "Honestly, I don't care. It's not my policy. I'm just reporting it since my sister couldn't because she kept having bad connections with your customer support while a hurricane is happening. Can you just give me a claim number and she can get back to you when her life stops being a shitstorm of destruction?"
AS: "Yes, do you have a pen and paper to write it down?"
ME: "Can't you just email or text it to her? All that information should be on her policy."
AS: "No."
ME /WTF!?!
Just to get the claim number took me 35 minutes.

There are gas shortages all over North Texas around Dallas and Ft. Worth. I spent a couple hours yesterday getting both the gas tanks of my truck and my wife's car filled. Huge lines for gas stations that stretched for a mile or more. Most were out of gas with a couple hours.
Also went to Wal-mart to get a few things and pretty much no ones credit or debit card were working. Something about the system being down. The only people getting through were the ones that had cash or one lil old lady who paid with a check. So I went and pulled $600 out.
The people who's cards weren't working didn't just leave the groceries and go home or another store, they kept insisting that the cashier kept trying to run the card. It was like they didn't get it. This blocked off people who had cash.

As far as the credit card machines being down, we also try to keep some petty cash (around $500 in smaller bills) in house as emergency money, but it routinely gets bled for day to day walking around money. Last I checked it was down to a few hundred bucks. A few hundred dollars in cash = exactly jack shit in an emergency, so I need to make it a serious point to keep that little envelope refilled. As an aside, I'm kind of surprised ATM's were up and running if credit card machines weren't. Stay safe out there, amigo! |

But yeah, we went to pick up some extra water and gas cans at our Wal-Mart, gas cans were gone. At work, we were planning on buying a new fuel transfer tank (the kind you see in the back of pick-ups)...also, all gone. Word is people are heading towards Texas and bringing as much gas a possible with them.
In other news, our house is now wired with a generator transfer switch! Also bought a load of batteries this week. We're all keeping a close eye on Irma.

I'm terrible about keeping cash. We try to stash a little in the kids "piggy bank"...but it quickly dwindles...if there is money around, my wife WILL spend it. But yeah, we went to pick up some extra water and gas cans at our Wal-Mart, gas cans were gone. At work, we were planning on buying a new fuel transfer tank (the kind you see in the back of pick-ups)...also, all gone. Word is people are heading towards Texas and bringing as much gas a possible with them. In other news, our house is now wired with a generator transfer switch! Also bought a load of batteries this week. We're all keeping a close eye on Irma. OM, I can't recall (and am too lazy to search threads here  ), is your genie a dual fuel model? People may be hoarding gas and diesel and creating a shortage, but I'm guessing propane is still readily available. |

Yeah, we have stored and treated gas in the garage (3 five gallon cans, one 2.5 gallon and a few 1 gallon cans). I generally save that for emergencies though and the only thing that gets run with is the lawn mower and weed whacker. Once a year I run my trucks tank dry and dump the stored gas into it and switch it out. I figured filling up the gas tanks for the vehicles was wise before everyone in town was out and we couldn't get to work. Figured that I'd save the gas cans for last. If my truck runs out we'll switch to using my wife's car which gets a lot better mileage. I've been running calls all day and I've been paying attention to the activity around the pumps of the stations we've passed. Only about one in five have anyone actually fueling up anything and mostly that's been diesel. Diesel hasn't been too hard to find, we fueled up twice today. About one in ten have unleaded gas and every time I saw that they had some it turned out to be premium. It has me considering a diesel vehicle. I'm also buying at least two more 5 gallon cans after this. --- On the ATM working : Yeah, that was weird. I was half expecting it not to work. Maybe it was just Walmart having issues from dealing with a huge amount of people making purchases. I dunno. However I did have an issue later when my debit/Visa bank card wouldn't go through at the gas station as a debit and the gas station attendant told me to hit the credit button after he rang it up again and it went through fine then. Weird. I'm thinking too many purchases clogging things up. Just a guess. |
